Episiotomy open and granulation tissue ?

Looking for some moral support and advice :(
Had my wonderful baby girl 9 weeks ago.
I have had episiotomy and I pulled my stitches after 12 days by mistake ;(
Left with opened hole and to heal naturally.
Had a infection and cleared with antibiotics.
9 weeks pp , still has pain and the wound looks red and tender, GP did a check and sent a swab but no infection now.
Was told the sides are healed, it’s the middle part needs healing.
Hand another check with GP yesterday and she said extra tissue is forming but it’s fine and if required can be repaired ( may be meant silver nitrate ) and will see me again in 2 or 3 weeks.
I am not sure if it’s granulation tissue , rarely it bleeds when wiped ( using baby wipes)
Unable to sit for long time or stand at all for short times also :( always lying on bed.

Please please do I need to get it treated or ask GP to re check for over granulation and do something ? Also why is it so red :( ;(
Never knew episiotomy will be so bad otherwise would have never asked for it ;(

Hi there,
I had my son in June last year. I had an episiotomy & my stitches went by day 4 post birth. I was left to heal naturally (from the inside out). I would say 9 weeks is still pretty early. It was more like 12 weeks before I sort felt kinda healed. I certainly looked & felt very raw down there for a long time. I do remember by 6m pp, actually saying I feel back to normal now. I did have some aches & pain on the episiotomy for a good few months. I had what looked like a bit of granulation (it didn’t bleed) it just fell off one day 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m not almost a year pp & everything is absolutely fine.

I had the silver nitrate treatment for granulation of scar tissue caused by 2nd degree tear. I was in quite a bit of pain with the scar (affected how far I could walk for example), but the silver nitrate completely sorted it! Think I had the treatment at week 11 or 12.

DarlingBabyMom · 13/06/2021 22:05

@Johnson10 thank you for replying. I am sorry you have to go through the same pain Shock and happy that you are recovered now Smile
Felt kind of raw means was it scar ? Or it will be like raw red flesh ?
Also was granulation inside wound or on surface ? Should I ask my GP to do silver nitrate for me ? I am not sure though If I ask they do it. Bcz I have read in other threads, inside granulation will stop healing :( Confused

@SingingSands thank for the reply. Oh , sure let me push my GP for it.
I am in so much of pain , I can’t stand for even a min without pain Sad
I was actually better before but now I think from past 4 days the pain has doubled Sad

Atleast I wish to get the wound healed first Sad so that I can hold my baby girl for longer time and take her for little walks Smile She is an angel Smile and gives me sad look whenever I give her to my husband or mom as can’t hold her for longer time due to this pain which is making me more depressed :(
I am able to walk a bit , but when I try to stand it’s like hell :(

Just sending you heaps of good wishes

Please be kind to yourself xxxxxxx

I had an episiotomy with my second. Mine healed fine but I was still getting pain at 6 months and it still gives me twinges at 10 months. I think it’ll be another 6 months before I don’t notice it as it was nearly 18 months before my cs scar with my first felt normal.
I was ordered to take paracetamol and ibuprofen for my episiotomy by the midwives and it really helped. I took them for almost as long as did first time for my cs!

DarlingBabyMom · 14/06/2021 02:26

@Queenie6655 thank you Smile

@mayblossominapril oh god bless you ... I am also taking paracetamol and ibuprofen.. which helps a bit ... I have thought I will be back to normal soon as had vaginal birth and in agony as no one warned me about episiotomy... I didn’t even knew there is such a thing Sad ... constantly regretting and feeling guilt as asked it my self SadSad

Mine took a while to heal, around 8 weeks (I also pulled a stitch), and I had pain there even after it did, despite getting GP to check and her saying she couldn’t see anything, nothing came up on swabs, etc. It just took a long time to heal and settle down. But have your GP look regularly to check - and I hope it heals soon. It will do and you will feel so much better when it does, I promise!

irresistibleoverwhelm · 14/06/2021 02:39

Oh and I learned to feed lying down because of it. Worth trying!

DaisyChain21 · 14/06/2021 03:19

Hi. I had over granulation tissue and it was really painful to go to the toilet for a good few months after birth. I ended up using flaminal gel (I think that's what it was called) and it helped a bit to protect the tissue but it just ended up healing itself over time and now it's completely fine. I got told over granulation tissue is a darker red.

miltonj · 14/06/2021 04:39

Maybe ask to be referred to a gynaecologist. My scar over healed and the gynaecologist was amazing.

mayblossominapril · 14/06/2021 07:20

Don’t feel guilty, I doubt they would have given you one if you didn’t actually need it. I had to push for an extra 15 mins pointlessly before I got one as dd wouldn’t come out with out one.
I think the healing process is downplayed by hcps. As others have said ask for a referral and I would ask for more painkillers as I think there are stronger anti inflammatories available on prescription. I hope it starts improving soon

DarlingBabyMom · 14/06/2021 07:44

Thank you everyone for posting positive. It just feels better with hearing things actually improve after certain time. May be I am just being impatient or due to the pain :(
I have always loved babies Smile not sure why I just love baby phase and I am just in tears that I m missing this phase with my DD ... m trying to spend as much as I can Blush

I had this after my first birth, episiotomy followed by granulated tissue. It was agony!

I eventually saw the GP who prescribed a cream (I think it was called Fucibet?), and it cleared it up in no time! This was in 2014 so the name might have changed.

For what it's worth, I had another baby in 2018, no episiotomy but did tear and required a fair bit of stitching and it didn't happen that time so I guess it was just bad luck!

Mine took 12 weeks to heal and was just as you described - very red and raw looking

I had a huge amount of overgranulation, which they thought would need surgery but 2 sessions of silver nitrate sorted it. This was done in the hospital by the gyne consultant but I also had a small amount of over granulation with my 2nd that the GP was able to do.

I sympathize, it's awful. I'd say it was 7months before I started to feel normal and I also needed lots of physio to help with the scarring but I didn't need surgery in the end and I'm now 5 years down the line and have just has my 3rd baby without so much as a graze 😁

Happy to hear healing stories ... but ... Oh dear god ... though I didn’t expect delivery to be a walk in park ... was not expecting this much pain and stress :( I was a very happy soul during pregnancy Blush
6 months is looking like a huge time for me :( I don’t want to go back to work by then ... I am not going back to work till Feb 2022, looks like I need to extend for some more time Sad

Honestly don’t worry! I remember looking at a gapping wound thinking how will this ever heal & sobbing. Almost a year later - all healed, I have no pain or discomfort at all.

HeyMicky · 14/06/2021 16:18

You could ask your GP if there is a specialist wound clinic you could be referred to. The HCPs there will know more about wound care than your GP and will be able to help do the edges are not advancing. Don't let it become chronic Thanks

DarlingBabyMom · 14/06/2021 18:24

Sure will ask my GP about the same.
I have already asked GP if I can get referred to Gynaecologist, she said , first they Will do the checks and if required can be referred.
