Bless him he sounds cold. That's usually the reason in the early days. We got a space heater for our room where the changing pad was and I used to turn it on before a change to keep the baby a bit warmer

I remember my baby doing this, it's just a phase and it will pass, my now 10 month old hates getting dressed and cries and whinges just seems to be a phase they tend to go through. He will probably be fine in a week or two, babies are weird haha. Congratulations btw

I'm also thinking he may be cold. Do you use a changing mat that's cold?

HappyWipings · 07/03/2021 18:22

Totally normal. Try putting a towel on the changing mat so that it's not too cold.

Missmonkeypenny · 07/03/2021 18:23

Another vote for cold. Towel or muslin on ghr changing mat, wipes on the radiator if you can ir warm water and cotton wool so it isn't a chilly shock and be quick about it Smile

Yep pop a towel down. Otherwise lying flat can make reflux/wind feel worse, in which case you can pop a thin pillow under the changing mat to create a gentle slope. Another tip is to pop some black and white drawings on the ceiling where he can see them to distract him - worked a charm for me

My son did this. Every time. He hated anything that involved getting his clothes off. Hated the bath. Hated getting dressed. Screamed all the time. He just grew out of it eventually. Must be a newborn thing.

Ours did this. Eventually she just got used to it but when she was tiny it helped to put a Minnie Mouse stuffed toy by the changing mat - she would stare at it mesmerised, I think because of the big eyes it was a really obvious face. Worth trying if you have any toy like that

Sometimes babies just don’t want to be messed about with! My DS was perfectly happy in a dirty nappy and would scream the place down when I changed him. He was a summer baby so certainly wasn’t cold. He just didn’t like having his nappy changed! Your ds may be a bit young now, but maybe a toy in his hand would distract him?

Mine did this for the first few Weeks it was horrible! Then one day he just stopped and now he's fine (10 weeks). Normally smiling whilst being changed nowadays!

Pp's all good advice, I would add to not do it if he's hungry, their ability to wait for food is non existent in early days so I'd try to time changes for when he isn't fractious for any other reason when possible. Bizarrely when mine did this if I blew very soft air over his face it distracted him just enough to get it done without the screaming really escalating, it helped my stress a bit.
