Electrical Breast Pump

Hello everyone. So four days i was pumping off of my left breast and my nipple was in so much pain that i could only pump off for two minutes. i asked my partner to look at it and he noticed it was spilt. That night i felt so achy getting up with my baby. They say after that i could barely get out of bed and had high temperatures. In the evening i noticed my breast becoming red. Then at night i kept waking with hot and cold flushes. Next morning my boob redness looked a lot more angrier. I then got referred from the doctors to the hospital where i currently am at. i have been here for two days now. Once i get home i am not sure whether to pump of that breast anymore. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so did they continue to breast feed/pump off. any advice would be nice .

Look up on google mastitis and engorgement. Yes it’s still fine to pump on that side but look at how to prevent the two conditions I just stated.

Ask either in the hospital where you are or contact your midwife/HV and they will be able the help. Without knowing your diagnosis and anyedicatioks your on it's difficult to give informed advice.

Are you exclusively pumping?

I'd imagine the flange size on the pump is the wrong size for your nipple then. I can't advise on how to find the right size (I guess I just got lucky with the one I bought!) but I'm sure there'll be information on google if there's nothing in the pump instruction manual.

Hope you feel better soon OP, mastitis is nasty 😔

@FoxtrotSkarloey

I ended up in hospital with mastitis and I didn't actually continue to feed or pump because I was admitted via A&E and wasn't able to pump whilst in hospital, but wasn't too concerned as DS was six months old and I was on the verge of stopping bf anyway. However, by the time I saw a breast specialist, he said the best thing would have been if they'd brought me a pump from maternity to prevent engorgement by allowing me to reduce milk production gradually (normally you'd drop one feed at a time until supply stops naturally) or to maintain supply to allow me to continue to bf if I wanted to. Feeding or expressing is a good way to stop the ducts getting blocked.

If you want to still bf/express and can do it, keep going. Just make sure you don't have the suction set too high which will make it more painful with the cracks.

Good luck. It's so bloody painful but so worth it.

thankyou so much, i am still pumping atm but not at a high setting as it still hurts. x
