Umbilical hernia

Hi, I’m worried about my baby’s belly button. She’s 5 weeks old. Her belly button was inside (normal) and when she was around 2 weeks old I was washing her and accidentally scrubbed her belly button and it came out (outie) and now it’s a hernia. When she cries or strains it protrudes even more but I’m able to gently press it in as it’s soft but I worry about it. I’ve found some babies umbilical belts online that I want to try to use and resolve this but I just wanted to see if anyone else has used this belt and how it was. Thank you.

Has a doctor seen her op?

My daughter was born with two hernias, they spotted it when we were in the maternity hospital, she was seen monthly as they wished to wait to operate, and at nine months old they did, they went in via her belly button and sewed them up so she had no scarring.

The doctors are the best people to advise here.

Thanks for commenting, she hasn’t been seen by a doctor yet, her 8weeks check is due in about 2 weeks. She wasn’t born with the hernia, the guilt I feel here is that I caused it when I accidentally scrubbed it whilst giving her a wash. When she had her 10day old check, the midwife said it had healed up (no hernia then).

Yes you need to take her to the GP. They can make a referral to the paediatrician in case it needs fixing. Sometimes they just get monitored as it can resolve itself.

Agree, op you need to take her to the doctor Op. honestly there is nothing to be guilty about and this isn’t about your guilt. But they need to check it out. Give them a call in the morning.
