Crying- whats normal???

hi
My LO is 3 weeks old. She cries frequently for no apparent reason- she's been fed, is dry etc. And there is absolutely no comforting her. I've tried walking around, white noise, singing/ talking, swaddling, hugging, a dummy and none of it works. She goes from calm and happy to screaming the house down in the blink of an eye. Is this normal? I feel like a terrible mum cos sometimes I just can't soothe her at all.

Colic? Check the NHS website for colic definition. Hope you're ok OP, sounds like you're doing an amazing job, sometimes baby's just cry! But by the sounds of it, it's more excessive than normal and maybe get baby checked out/chat to your local health advisors (?)- forgotten what they're called!

Hey Unfortunately all babies are different and you are a new mum who has suddenly had a baby and thinking whoh thought it would be easier than this and at the same time you are tired, feeling vulnerable and yeh like you said the worse mum in the world. Trust me I have been there and yeh got a two year old who has her lovely spells and then proper attitude/tantrums. I have moments quite a lot where I feel I'm useless and the worse mum out cause I'm shouting at her cause I'm struggling with life and not knowing what's best. Thing is tho it's a kinda run it out and as much as they are hard and not knowing what they want just got to swallow hard cry when they don't see you doing it and breathe. Then comfort them and carry on. I'm sorry I'm not much use but just want to say I'm here if you want to chat or rant ok. Take care x

Thank you both for your replies. I'm going to try one of the colic remedies and see if that helps. Otherwise ill try my health visitor.

Hey its definitely worth speaking to the health visitor. 3 weeks is around the time colic can kick in . I've just had my third DC and started to use infacol bc I could see it coming. He also has reflux - obvious when they are projectile vomiting. But my first DC had silent reflux as well as colic . Generally their wee digestive systems are still adjusting at this stage. So speak to HV but have a Google of colic and be mindful of silent reflux (if they scream when placed flat in their crib this may be a sign).
Its really hard this stage and i feel your pain! But def call the health visitor. Good luck x

I had a baby that cried nearly all the time (now 12) the only things that stopped it was getting her to sleep. Tried infacol and colic remedies etc. to no affect. There is a book called 'the happiest baby' by Harvey Karp which has useful approaches to getting them to calm and sleep.

But in retrospect I really regret not investigating crying further, she was my first and people (including HV) say all babies cry. Its only with exposure to more babies I realise how much more she cried. She was BF and had excema and I wonder if it was alergies.
