Newborn has done a poo in 3 days now. His 8 days old and can see is in agony is there anything I can do to help him?

Have you tried gently cycling his legs? That usually does it.

LatteLover12 · 18/08/2020 21:07

Is he breast or bottle fed?

It's totally normal for breastfed babies to poo less often.

If he's got trapped wind cycling legs is a good shout but also lying him over your knees on his tummy and rubbing his back.

Hope he's feeling more comfortable soon.

Tyrannosaurusdrip · 18/08/2020 21:09

Small amount of cooled Boiled water might work if he'll take it. Cycling his legs, rubbing his belly clockwise, all this helped my wee one.

ActualStork223 · 18/08/2020 21:14

Cooled boiled water , rubbing the tummy, cycling the legs... My ds had same thing he was formula fed and we changed from cow and gate to aptimil which helped in conjunction with everything else xx

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/08/2020 21:24

At 8 days old that would be a concern for me. Have you spoken to your health visitor or the hospital. If the community midwife hasn't discharged you yet you should still be under their care.

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/08/2020 21:25

Newborns should poo at least once a day for the first 4 weeks.

SRK16 · 18/08/2020 21:27

Contact your health visitor (or GP), with a little one so young it’s important to be careful.

Babyshine2020 · 18/08/2020 21:29

My breastfeed baby was born recently. Pooped for the first three days, then went 8 days without pooping.

Midwives etc aren't interested until there's no wet nappies it seems..

I tried keeping a warm flannel on baby belly at bath time.
Rubbing belly.
Bicycle legs.

I don't think any of it helped but we're now getting Atleast one poo a day (16 days old). They've been getting bigger too so everything must be moving. Just keep an eye that there belly doesn't get hard!

Longdistance · 18/08/2020 21:55

@sophie269 if he’s bf, it’s not unusual for them to not poop. As pp, cycling the legs really helps. Just duck, otherwise it can be a poonami.

And warm bath!

midwifeync · 18/08/2020 23:16

Op, do not under any circumstances give your 8 day old baby puréed or juiced anything as @Justjoshin22 has suggested. I'm absolutely speechless, that is incredibly dangerous advice. Even cool boiled water at this age shouldn't really be necessary unless specifically advised by a health care professional.

Op, it can be normal. Is baby breast feeding well? It is worth contacting your community midwife as they know what going on with you and babe more than any of us lot. In a couple of days your HV will be in contact if they haven't already been! Contact your community midwife - good luck

premiumshoes · 18/08/2020 23:19

Pure apple / orange / pear juice
All the Ps - puréed pears, peaches, prunes, pees

Jesus Hmm

Please OP, ignore this nonsense.

Justjoshin22 · 19/08/2020 06:45

@midwifeync and @premiumshoes did you even read my post?

Call GP I’ve had this with my seven month old and have put down everything below but because your baby is so little I’d speak to health visitor / GP;

My advice related to my seventh month old NOT a newborn and was recommended by a GP which is what worked for us. Also:

www.nhs.uk/start4life/baby/breastfeeding/breastfeeding-challenges/constipation/

Hmm. Nhs website which references apples pears and prunes. Oh and look here is another one on nct site:

www.nct.org.uk/baby-toddler/your-babys-health/what-watch-out-for/constipation-babies-qa?gclid=Cj0KCQjw-O35BRDVARIsAJU5mQUWjU04LrNcNs5MvdCdg2MgCmlYO1poJeja5dbOXMtJC6rNySidWO8aApIyEALw_wcB

And funny, here’s another one;

www.cgbabyclub.co.uk/baby/health/constipation-problems.html#

OP, you’ll get lots of advice on Mumsnet. Take what you find useful, ignore what you do not. I’d also suggest ignoring posters who call others mums experience nonsense and have an inability to read a post in its entirety.

As I mentioned above, I’d call your GP.

Good luck

premiumshoes · 19/08/2020 07:10

did you even read my post?

Yes, I did.

My advice related to my seventh month old NOT a newborn and was recommended by a GP which is what worked for us. Also:

Why? What stood out from your post was what worked for your child which is completely irrelevant.

Justjoshin22 · 19/08/2020 07:45

@premiumshoes yes, for a newborn baby, the puréed fruit would not be advisable. Agreed. If that had been the case i would get it the sarky reply. But I clearly didn’t not advise it.

The reason I mentioned it along with the warm bath, cycling legs etc and made this very clear, is because it may be that this lady has issues further down the line... or someone else with an older baby might reads it... or because this is a platform to share experiences and i am allowed to do that.

Just because it’s not advice for a newborn does not mean it’s nonsense.

At least I tried to help the OP with my experience and did not purely use the thread to discredit someone else.

But you know, whatever does it for you HmmHmm

The guff you posted about purée etc was unnecessary. You then went on to post links to prove you were right. Here you are again Hmm

Listen, there was a no fucking need to post details about what you were told about your baby as it DOES NOT APPLY to the OP situation. Imagine someone reading this and thinking 'oh yes, I will try that' Hmm

OP is asking about a newborn baby so how you deal with it in your older baby has much relevance as how I relive my cat when it can't shit.

You are not wrong in the advice you give, but it is bloody dangerous to give that advice in the wrong situation, which is here.

Justjoshin22 · 19/08/2020 08:03

You’d be right if it wasn’t for the fact I made it really clear that it was for an older baby and pointed her to the GP. I’m sure OP can read...
Look. Point taken. But although it wasn’t all entirely relevant (the bath, massage and cycling was) neither was it nonsense. I just wanted to give a full breakdown of what I tried because it was so recent and I’m sure you could have seen from my first post that it was intended to be helpful. I don’t think it was dangerous but clearly you disagree so fine. There’s really no need to be so aggressive and swear on a parenting page.
Have a nice day.

premiumshoes · 19/08/2020 08:43

You’d be right if it wasn’t for the fact I made it really clear that it was for an older baby

There was zero point in posting irrelevant information. It's like going on a thread for teenagers and saying what works for your granny. You didn't need to 'make it clear' you just didn't need to post it at all.

There’s really no need to be so aggressive and swear on a parenting page.

Swearing is allowed. I even gave it a strike through to soften it up for you because I just knew you would be a bit bothered by it Hmm

premiumshoes · 19/08/2020 08:46

But although it wasn’t all entirely relevant (the bath, massage and cycling was) neither was it nonsense.

I said nonsense relating to the irrelevant information, not your whole post. In fact, I even bold quoted the part that I specifically called nonsense. I don't say a single thing about the bath/massage/cycling. Maybe read it properly before jumping to defend something that didn't happen.

Kayjay2018 · 19/08/2020 09:21

My little one (now 15 weeks) went a few days with no poop at that age. The midwives advises me to up my fruit and veg intake and I found tinned pears work well (as I'm breastfeeding if I have a tin of those she usually poops about 12 hours later), they said that mums diet can have an impact. I also did bicycle legs, warm baths, gentle tummy rubs in a clockwise direction. Your midwives will be happy to talk you need advice, I felt a bit silly calling them but they were great, really understanding!

midwifeync · 20/08/2020 00:18

@Justjoshin22 yes I read your post, obviously, I'm not going to reply to something if I haven't read it.

It was not at all clear that your advice was relating to your 7 month old. Why would you post that when it doesn't help OP at all!?

It sounded like you were advising that for a newborn and that's what matters here. Doesn't matter what you did or didn't mean, it's how it sounds. Be more careful in future because that is downright dangerous.
