Six week appointment after Stillbirth

My beautiful son was stillborn last month after a very late term diagnosis of Pataus Syndrome. I have amazing support from my mum and the midwives were all truly incredible.
Whilst in the hospital I was advised it is very important that I go to my GP for a six week check up. As I want to try for a baby again it's for physical and of course mental health.

I got a ten minute phone call. The doctor didn't ask about my health or even ask any questions really and she seemed annoyed I was taking up time with her. She did prescribe 5mg folic acid when I requested it so I'm thankful for that but I'm shocked that this is the level of care after stillbirth.
Does anyone else have this same experience? Or is this just my GP? I feel for any women going through it who don't have strong family behind her.
Also I'm in NI and of course I understand we must be careful with Covid but I just really can't see this as being OK.

OP I’m so sorry for your loss 💐 . You’re right , it’s not good enough.

Californiabakes · 04/08/2020 23:22

That’s appalling and really not good enough.
So sorry about the death of your son.

CoffeeRunner · 04/08/2020 23:23

I’m so so sorry. You should have received the upmost of care after what you’re going through/have been through.

You gave birth 6 weeks ago. The fact your baby sadly didn’t survive makes you a higher priority surely. Not an inconvenience.

OP next to my candle for John Hume I’ve lit a small candle for your little boy x

Thanks so much for your kind words. I feel OK now but to be honest the call last week just made me more upset and that was just not good.
@boscoismyspiritanimal oh my word that is so kind. Thank you so very much xx

OP I've just read this and wanted to tell you that your little one and you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Completely unacceptable of your GP. We have now lived with the pandemic long enough , maternity and post natal care needs never changed nor should basic compassion for a bereaved Mother.

I am so sorry you experienced this .

@Boscoismyspiritanimal kindness shown by posters like yourself restore my faith in humanity.

@Hannahusky so sorry for the tragic loss of your precious ds. 💐

Thank you so much for your kind words and understanding.
I'm actually having a zoom meeting with some local politicians and policy makers next week to discuss what happened and to push to make sure this does not happen to others. @sogi I totally agree. We will live with this disease for years to come so we need to figure out how to cope longterm and allowing women who have gone through this to not get support is unacceptable. Thank you everyone.

I'm so sorry for your loss Hannahusky, you are right that it is unacceptable. There appears to be a loss of compassion in so many areas of life recently.

So sorry for your loss. I too lost a baby to Pataus. I found ARC really supportive and helpful at what was such a difficult time.

Ella123456 · 14/08/2020 21:12

I am so sorry for your loss OP. I can only imagine what you’ve been through but am totally shocked at the treatment from your GP and agree that this is totally unacceptable. I had a 1 hr face-to-face NHS physio postnatal appointment today - COVID is absolutely no excuse for the treatment that you have received and I’m so sorry that you have been subjected to it. I admire you so much in pushing to make sure that others don’t have to go through a similar experience.
