Anybody supplementing with Vit D? Research is generally saying we should? 38 weeks' today with my third but it's all changed since my last baby 10 years ago!

My MW gave me the drops last time but as baby was mostly FF I didn't need to. I would supplement if EBF.

@SerBrienneOfHouseTarth Thank you. I'm assuming my GP will prescribe as I'm under the care of an Independent Midwife?

I am breastfeeding, nhs midwife, and was told to buy vitamin d drops. They are very cheap online.

dementedpixie · 15/05/2020 11:06

You dont need a prescription, they are cheap to buy

bookish83 · 15/05/2020 11:07

You buy them. Same for adults buying vitamins!

Nicknamegoeshere · 15/05/2020 11:32

Thanks guys. Just asked GP and his advice was not needed for summer but yes between Oct and March. He said to ask pharmacist re dose. Has anyone any idea re how much needed and cost please?

NHS says to supplement from birth if bf

dementedpixie · 15/05/2020 11:34

The Department of Health recommends that:

Babies from birth to 1 year of age who are being breastfed should be given a daily supplement containing 8.5 to 10 micrograms (µg) of vitamin D to make sure they get enough. This is whether or not you're taking a supplement containing vitamin D yourself.

Babies fed infant formula shouldn't be given a vitamin D supplement if they're having more than 500ml (about a pint) of infant formula a day, because infant formula is fortified with vitamin D and other nutrients.

Children aged 1 to 4 years old should be given a daily supplement containing 10µg of vitamin D

bluefoxmug · 15/05/2020 11:37

yes, you need to buy it yourself.

dementedpixie · 15/05/2020 11:40

You can get specific drops for babies - they only cost a few £s

Nicknamegoeshere · 15/05/2020 11:41

@dementedpixie Yes, I'm wondering if GP is perhaps not correct re the summer? I think I'll ask my pharmacist 😊

babies should not be exposed to direct sunlight at all, so supplement is needed regardless of time of year.

bookish83 · 15/05/2020 12:11

I give the drops (I do forget sometimes...) sold on boots. We did get a free small pack with the bounty pack though!

They are £10 on boots for baby DDrops.

I wish they came with a pipette rather than the open dropper though! X

Nicknamegoeshere · 15/05/2020 12:23

@bookish83 Thank you so much. My OH is looking on Amazon bless him 😊

bookish83 · 15/05/2020 12:43

No problem! If you find one with a pipette I'd get those but these drops are good. Noone told me either and friends had not heard, it was only because of the sample in the bounty pack

I have been hit and miss but with all this talk of vitamin D lately I have tried to do daily x

dementedpixie · 15/05/2020 12:49

Those Ddrops are expensive for the amount you get in a bottle.

Wellbaby does one and it seems to have a syringe

dementedpixie · 15/05/2020 12:55

Although I suppose it depends on dose as to whether it lasts the same amount of time

Nartl0ngNow · 06/07/2020 23:14

Asda do Arla fortified milk.
Also, women were given drops a few generations ago as part of their post natal care which was stopped.

AnnaSW1 · 06/07/2020 23:17

Yes

Inthesky42 · 07/07/2020 12:56

The baby d drops were great for me as you just put a drop on your nipple before a feed and that is your baby's daily dose sorted. No fuss with pipette or anything.

To agree with others you need to buy them and you need to give from birth regardless of the season. Make sure you also take vitamins if BF'ing as this will help ensure the baby gets the vitamins they need and ensures you don't get deficient!

Nicknamegoeshere · 07/07/2020 16:51

Baby is now six weeks and EBF - plan is to bf her for at least first three years. Thanks for all of your advice. She is having the Well baby Vit D dose daily Smile

I am continuing with my pregnancy multivitamins which is working well (includes Vit D). I find the specific breastfeeding ones far too expensive.

Interestingly, OH's physiotherapist (back issues) has told him he should also be taking Vit D daily too so he is doing Smile
