Residual effects of a pulmonary embolism

I had a PE just over a year ago while pregnant, 5 days in hospital, treated with clexane etc. Since then, I have had an aching pain in the location of the clot several times. The first time was about 7 weeks post partum, I was told to go to OOH by 111, they then sent me to ED, I was sent home 5 hours later with a negative D-dimer test feeling very much like I'd wasted everyone's time. So when it's happened since, I ignored it. Had anyone else had this?

TL;DR - normal to have an ache where there was a pulmonary embolism?

Hi, I had a massive PE (post operative) just over 2 years ago (was an ICU/calling my family job). I had quite a lot of pain during the immediate recovery - i.e. the following couple of months or so after, which I was told to expect as my body was clearing the clot.

I still do get the occasional pain - and have been checked out a few times, but it's been put down as pleuritic pain. Anxiety is also a factor in chest pain, and I've certainly had a lot of that since it happened!

On a side note - do NOT feel bad about getting checked out, you had a serious medical event, and although there seems to be a reason for yours (I'm assuming they described yours as provoked - due to pregnancy) and mine, we are still a little more likely than the general population to have one in the future.

Thanks @Vinosaurus, it's good to know there's a reasonable explanation for the pain. Especially as my anxiety is pretty high right now too!

Yes, mine was attributed to pregnancy. If I have another baby I'll need injections for all 40 weeks + 6 weeks postnatally! Oh the joys of clexane.

I don't think I appreciated the seriousness of the PE at the time, it was only when I got the pain again and my husband started to panic that I realised it was a bigger deal than I thought. Thanks for your post Smile

Hi... I have just come across this post, I'm 7 weeks post partum (twin pregnancy) I was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolisms at 29 weeks and started on high dose blood thhinning injections (Tinzaparain)... I'm still on the injections and see a Specialist heamatology nurse next week and a consultant in August. I'm just wondering what aftercare you recieved and how long you were on the blood thinners for? It's been mentioned I may need long term warfarin. And also what contraception do you now use? I'm anxious that some forms carry a risk of clots.
Thanks in advance Smile

Sorry @Lau5a only just saw this! I'm sorry you've had a PE. To answer your questions, I was on Rivaroxaban for 3 months after - was supposed to be longer but I was getting very anemic. DH had a vasectomy so no contraception for me, I believe any hormonal medication such as the pill or HRT are out for us.
