Expressing help

My baby boy was born 4 days ago. Both my nipples are inverted so he really struggled to latch and nipple shields don't really work. So I've been expressing. It looks like on average I should be able to get around 400ml in 4 sessions (1- 130ml one and 3 - 90ml ones). Is this enough? Baby seems super hungry.

Maybe I should do it more often to see if I can build a stash?

All help is appreciated.

If you are exclusively pumping for baby, it is recommended to do it approx 8times a day (including overnight)

I bf for a couple of months and after a few issues switched to pumping for majority of feeds (5 bottles of breastmilk with 2 bottles of formula each day)
I was able to pump 4 times a day and every night at 3am and this was enough to provide the 5 bottles of breastmilk each day.
My baby took 4oz in every bottle. (Most sessions I pumped 4oz, at 3am I always managed to pump more and also more at the first session after waking in the morning. I put the excess in the freezer)
Every baby is different though.
The Kelly mom site has some helpful info and there's another site exclusivepumping.com.
Good luck xx

Thank you! We had to top up with formula last night. I'll try a new approach of expressing as much as I can when at home hoping to build a stash

When I started expressing, I would do it everytime baby had a feed, to maintain my supply. 7 times in 24hours. Its a big commitment. I switched to expressing at breakfast time, lunchtime, tea time and before bed. And 3am. This allowed me to give 5 bottles of BM each day, 2 bottles of formula, and a little but extra to freeze.
Are you still breastfeeding too? X

Rainbowhairdontcare · 28/10/2019 09:01

No, no breastfeeding at all. His mouth is too small for the artificial nipples I get with the shields. My first was able to latch on one but just barely and she was on expressed milk too by day 3-5.

My nipples are a massive issue that most MWs /lactation consultants seem to dismiss

Huge congrats on your little one!
Fellow exclusive expresser here, 4 months in. Sounds like you're doing really well so far. The first six weeks or so are the most difficult - you really need to pump as often as you can to establish your supply, including at least one pump between 1am and 5am. Power pumping can be useful too (pump for 20 mins, rest for 10, pump for 10, rest for 10 then pump for a final 10). Your pumping schedule needs to mimic a feeding pattern in those early days, so 8-12 times in 24 hours. After about 6-8 weeks you can start dropping pumps and life gets a lot easier - I wish someone had told me this in the beginning as I felt like I was going to spend the entirety of my mat leave pumping. I'm now at a point where I can produce enough for his feeds (950ml) in 3 pumps a day.
Get a double electric pump and a hands free bra if you haven't already, it makes life a bit easier. Drink lots of water. I found getting a steriliser that also dries things saved me time so the pump was always ready to use (got one on Amazon for about £40).
If you are able to have a bit extra to freeze, test a small amount by freezing and defrosting - some people have issues with their milk tasting soapy after defrosting and baby refuses it, which obviously you don't want to happen after you've built up a huge stash!
Good luck! It's hard work but so worth it.
