Postnatal joint pain- is this normal?

Hi all

My baby is 15 weeks old and for the past few months my joints are so painful, literally every joint. I take painkillers and keep moving and by lunchtime I usually feel bit better. I am one stone heavier than I was pre-pregnancy and I go to yoga twice a week, I try and go for a walk each day to keep mobile.

I am breast feeding and wonder if this is something to do with hormones etc

I have been to doctor and they weren’t very helpful and said take paracetamol.

Has anyone suffered from this? Did it go? Did you do anything special to relieve pain etc?

Many thanks

It took me a year to not have stiff joints after DS was born (every time I stood up it took at least 5-10 steps for my ankles/knees to not hurt), I think it had a lot to do with the amount of swelling I had while pregnant - legs almost straight up and down from knees to ankles I was so swollen!

Hi Oct18. I'm going through the exact same thing. I'm 8 months postpartum and have experienced joint pain from about 8 weeks after having DD. I also breastfeed and initially thought that was the cause. More recently I've noticed that the aches aren't too bad some mornings but then worse on other days. My friend said she was the same until her DS turned 1.

I didn't experience any swelling during my pregnancy and I'm also about a stone heavier than before pregnancy. I simply think it's pregnancy hormones, particularly relaxin which softens ligaments, and believe this is the cause of the stiffness and aches. It's annoying but I'm confident it'll ease as it has for others. I hope it improves for you soon.

I would see the doctor ASAP for a check because post partum is a prime time for auto immune conditions to flare up. It isn’t normal. It may be something that will settle on its own eventually or may need medication. See GP.

Thank you all! I will go and see another GP. Sorry some of you are experiencing this too it’s horrible and glad to know that it should improve over time.
