Worried about rapid weight loss

So as not to drip feed - Currently 5 weeks postpartum. Pregnancy was awful with nausea the whole way through, and very severe in the first and second trimesters. I just couldn't stomach food and any time I ate it came back up but I was refused medication to help. I ended the pregnancy a few pounds lighter than I started it because of the weight loss at the beginning.

Now at 5 weeks postpartum I've lost 28 pounds since the birth and have been dropping at the same rate since week 2. I'm exclusively breastfeeding which I know isn't helping but surely this loss so quickly isn't normal? I'm eating when I can and don't feel hungry most of the time.

Can anyone suggest anything I can or should do? Is this normal?

I'd see GP OP. The weight loss could be because you're not eating enough but I think they need to check this is the cause and see why your appetite is low.

Have you been checked for anaemia too?

That’s a lot. A trip the GPS and maybe a dietian also. In the meantime high calorie night time snacks (fruit and nut mix, flapjacks, pots of custard, slice of cake).

Please go and see your GP. I lost lots of weight after having a baby and it was the symptom of an illness.

Please get your thyroid function checked

Okay- I think your starting weight is relevant here, and if the 28 pound loss is from the end of pregnancy? I’d expect a 28lb loss to not be too drastic a weight loss following birth as you’d have still had a baby and placenta and fluids to account for- despite losing weight overall.
But clearly if you were a normal BMI before pregnancy and ended up being full term and still weighing that, THEN lost 28 pounds making you underweight... that would be a concern. But losing 28lb in the five weeks following birth is surely quite normal and a good indication of whether it is an issue would be your current BMI?
