Granulated scar tissue episiotomy

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice or knowledge about this, as it's starting to get me down and making me worried.

I had my baby 7 months ago, it was a failed ventouse followed by forceps delivery and I had to have an episiotomy. I felt like healing was going fine and after about 6 weeks I had little to no pain.

However, a couple of months ago I noticed some spotting when I went to the toilet, had a look, and noticed some red tissue hanging down. I went to the GP and was told it was granulated scar tissue, she did two sessions of silver nitrate which was fine and she said it was very unlikely to come back.

Despite this, in the last month it seems to have returned and there seems to be more of it (although luckily no pain). I saw a different GP two weeks ago who had a look and was more concerned, and didn't want to do any more silver nitrate but referred me to gynecology and gave me a course of antibiotics as a precaution as she noted discharge and thought it looked sore.

I'm now feeling fairly stressed out about it. I was hoping she could just do some more silver nitrate and that would be that. I feel stuck in limbo waiting for this referral which could be ages, and concerned that it could be a bigger problem. I've also not had sex since I noticed it, and am really missing that intimacy in my relationship, and by 7 months was hoping things might start being able to get more back to normal...

So really just wanted to know, has anyone else been through this? What was the outcome? Is it worth going back to the gp and asking for more silver nitrate or is there no point? Am I able to try and have sex or will it just make everything worse?

Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

I had this. I also had an episiotomy but my stitches ruptured and it didn’t heal correctly- like you, I ended up with granulated scar tissue which was painful. I was sent to gynaecology and they basically have me a local anaesthetic before cutting it out and popping a couple of stitches in. After that, the granulated scar tissue didn’t return, however it was painful during intercourse - I know that’s probably not what you want to hear. I waited ages to go back to the doctor as I couldn’t face any more prodding around up there!
Anyway, eventually I was referred back and because I was planning to have another baby, they didn’t want to do anything invasive and gave me some instagel to numb it. They said that giving birth would likely solve the issue and I’m happy to report that it did- I’ve since had my second and the scar is no longer painful.
I hope you get sorted- I found it very distressing at the time xxx
