Breastfeeding and weight gain

Hey

So I managed to stay on top of my figure this pregnancy and am breastfeeding now
But I can feel the weight creeping up NOW!
I'm shattered, sedentary, and starving all the time. When up in the night I struggle not to eat I'm not talking packs of biscuits but even dark chocolate and an apple or an energy bar and I've racked up an extra 500 calls just in the night.

My fear is that

  1. Does breastfeeding make your body retain fat? Is it the hormones?
  2. How do I curb the intense sugar cravings and the constant need to pick and eat and snack?

I was the same with my 2 Confused

I had it in my head that I needed to eat more because I was breastfeeding... the food I craved were biscuits and chocolates.

I'm pregnant with number 3, due any day I'm going to try harder not to eat so much crap this time but we will see!

I'm a terrible comfort eater anyway so when I'm tired and feeling sorry for myself there's no stopping me. Blush

OP, I found "weight falls off when breastfeeding" to be a total myth. I had my first baby in my mid-20s and, like you, was ravenous while BF. I put on 2 stone AFTER the birth! Even when I stopped eating all the time, couldn't lose weight. Then stopped BF at about 6 months and lost a stone in 3 weeks without trying, and the rest came off fairly easily.

Second baby I was better prepared and controlled what I ate more, but still lost weight when I stopped BF.

I think the body does lay down fat for BF and so you shouldn't beat yourself up for not being back to "normal" so soon.

The disrupted sleep interferes with you metabolism and provides extra opportunity to eat. I was fat while breast feeding. The weigh has dropped back off now that I have stopped.
