My baby is 2 days old and on the day he was born he was doing good and we got sent home after a few hours. Yesterday on day 1 he had some vomiting and was quite restless, my midwife had came round and reassured us that he was doing good and had just took too much milk. Last night he was restless again but he did settle at 2am and slept until 6:30am. He had a feed then and slept from 8am and Iv had to disturb him to get him to take a feed which was at 2pm. He didn’t really wake up and is still flat out but did take a good feed. Should I call my midwife? Or is it ok for babies to sleep like this?

I would give them a call, newborns generally need feeding every 2-3 hours. I remember when I had my son and he slept for 4 hours straight in the hospital I was told to wake him up to feed x

I was told by my MW to feed my newborn DS at least every 4 hours. I didn't have to wake him she said, but at least dream feed him as newborns need to keep hydrated as babies can easily become dehydrated and then they deteriorate quite quickly.

I'm sure your DS will be fine, and likely the sick was just too much milk or clearing of mucus (my DS done this a lot for first few weeks) but give the MW service a call just to check and get some advice.

Also newborns tend to sleep at least 16 hours of the day and that doesn't always mean sleep overnight. Our DS liked being awake between 11.30am-3.30am and asleep rest of the day with occasional half hour periods of alertness for his first few months of life .

Congrats too Flowers

Definitely ring midwife or GP surgery who will see your newborn today.

Congratulations on your new baby! Flowers

It can take a few days for them to recover from birth - it’s quite an ordeal for them as well as us!

Keep waking him to feed at least every 4 hours (I got told off by my MW for leaving it 5 hours one night Blush ) and keep in contact with the MW outside of their usual daily visit if he doesn’t feed properly or wake up at least some of the time.

Don’t feel bad for calling them if you have any worries - that’s their job and they’ve seen thousands of babies so will know exactly what to worry about and what to let go.

My DD was sleepy and reluctant to feed for the first few days, and they had me wake her for feeds every 3 hours or so, strip her down to her nappy, tickle her - anything to get her to stay awake to take a feed. It was very hot that summer which didn't help, and she was jaundiced so it was important to get her to feed.

It will be the heat! I would just keep waking her and doing the best you can. Mention it to the GP but I honestly wouldn’t worry yourself - as a Pp said, they need recovery time from birth (some more than others) and time to perk up to the world
