How to breastfeed and lose weight at the same time

Just that really...I am nursing my 2 month old and Im ready to exercise and lose a few pounds. I have just over a stone to lose, but I'm worried that if i reduce my calories or cut down on food I won't produce enough milk for my DD. Any advice or tips would be appreciated?

I'm in no hurry to lose the weigh but would like to know how to go about it effectively.

I personally wouldn’t calorie reduce until 6 months or so. By that point your dd will be weaning and your milk supply will be completely settled. You burn about 500 calories a day extra breastfeeding anyway, so you might find you don’t need to worry about it just yet.

Six months of breast feeding saw me at half a stone lighter than before I got pregnant. Don't do anything to reduce food yet. Its early days and you may find the fat starts to melt away as the baby's feeds get bigger.

It just melted off me whilst I was breastfeeding without really much trying at all and I'd say it's like that for a lot of people! I wouldn't calorie control but maybe a bit exercise even just taking baby out for walks in the pram for half an hour to an hour a few times a week would be fine. If you want to go back to other exercise though then go for it. I went back to spin classes when DD2 was 6 weeks old and she was exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of her life. What I would also say though is please try to enjoy your baby rather than worry about your weight as it does all settle itself in time and they're tiny for such a short space of time!

Thanks all. I think you are probably right, it may well be too soon as i definitely don't want to cut or reduce my supply. I have been losing weight gradually since I gave birth, I just thought that now that i have fully recovered I should be proactively trying to lose weight.

@Myusernameisunique I definitely agree with you

Nothing wrong with increasing your fitness slowly though - lfast pram walks (ideally with big hills) enough to get you out of breath are a good base line. Or finding a home fitness programme you like on YouTube etc and putting that on a couple of times a week,

I actually developed heart palpitations post pregnancy and it was in part due to complete inactivity on my part post birth and for a year after! Wish I'd got back into it earlier.

You will loose baby weight easily whilst breastfeeding without doing much! No harm in a bit of exercise though if your ready for it and enjoy it. Reducing calories to normal amount wouldn’t effect your supply - but only if you think you are eating over and above more than you should, if you are eating normal amount then no need.
I liked having the excuse to eat what I liked for A long time!

Seriously don't diet while establishing breastfeeding. You will make yourself ill.

I’m in the same boat but I’m so hungry all the time while bf. try surge free flapjack biscuits (4oz of butter flower honey raisins or dried fruit and oats) oats are g8 for ur milk supply and iron plus they are better than snacking on hob nobs
