Newborn sleeping too much?

I know it sounds like the dream to have a sleeping baby but I am concerned.

My DS is 5 days old and has been asleep for 10 hours now. Put him down at 10pm He woke at 4am for a medium sized feed. And still hasn't woken yet.

I'm having to express my milk as it's so sore. (Worried about mastitis). Should I also be worried about my supply if he isn't waking at night?

He was a bit jaundiced yesterday and had a very wet poop in his nappy (I have been up all night with a tummy bug so maybe he has it too?)

The midwife is coming today. So I will ask her. But I also wanted to get the advice of other mums.
(My friend told me the MW will tell me to set alarms to wake him. But if he is gaining weight ok then I shouldn't as it could discourage him from being a good sleeper)

I'm torn. Obviously the immediate health of my baby is more important than long term Sleep)

At 5 days I’d personally wake to feed. Dd was like this as a baby and we were told not to wait more than 4 hours in the early days. Their tummy is so small they need feeding frequently. She struggled to feed because she was tired, then was too hungry to wake so a nasty cycle to get into! I don’t think waking to feed at 5 days old will affect any long term sleeping habits!

When my DS was born he had a touch of jaundice and I was told to feed every 3 hours. I would probably wake up baby now and try to feed. Definitely ask the midwife though.

Thank you for your advice. No don't want to fall into the too sleepy to feed routine. He's very difficult to get a latch any way.

I think you are right. I will start waking him every 3 hours. At least during the day to begin with. And then perhaps tonight he will wake up like usual anyway.

Jaundice makes babies sleepy. It needs addressing. I’d never ordinarily wake a sleeping baby normally, but absolutely I would if there’s jaundice.

Definitely wake to feed - our midwife said let them sleep max 3-4 hours. Also you'll feel better as you won't get so engorged

Though in the night I've let ours go 5 hours as I reckon me getting sleep in a block odd more important!

Bluebelltulip · 17/04/2018 10:12

I was told 6 hours at night was OK by my mw, so I would really suggest just talking to your mw when you see her, it might be that the jaundice changes things, could depend on how often they feed in the day etc.

With a jaundiced baby you absolutely need to wake. There's no way I'd let a jaundiced 5 day old go 10 hours. I would always wake to feed, including at night, at least until baby has regained birth weight.

Stealthtoast · 17/04/2018 10:18

though in the middle of the night I've let ours go 5 hours as i need the sleep!

Thanks for your replies. I woke him just after 8am and he had a good feed. I expressed the other boob as it was sore.
He's fed about 3 times since he woke up which is good. And I'm sitting by the window to expose him yo some daylight- a shame summer hasn't arrived yet as it's so full here today
