Infected umbilical cord!! Picture attached

Hi don't no if I'm posting in the right place but I think my baby's cord is infected, I'm not sure what to do as I don't no for definite that is it, only I've worried myself now with things I've read online that it can be fatal? Can anyone help?

Call your midwife for advice.

Call 111 they will be able to advise you if you need to see someone tonight or tomorrow.

I can never get through to them when I ring I always end up leaving a message and they get back to me when they pick the message up x

Congratulations on the birth of your baby. How old is he/she? My dds fell off after a week.

Maybe get your HV to check it.

Hiya she's 11 days old and it's still on there, I'm worried it looks infected but don't want to take her out at night if there's nothing wrong with it if that makes sense

That doesn't look infected, it looks like it's separating. Is your baby ok otherwise? If it's gunky you can clean round it with cooled boiled water and try to fold the nappy down so it gets air to it and it doesn't get irritated. That should help healing. Do you have a midwife appointment soon?

Agree with PP, you need to contact your maternity unit for advice. You should have an out of hours number on your postnatal discharge notes

If you at all concerned that your baby is unwell and you think you need urgent help there’s not a doctor in the land that would berate you for taking your precious newborn into your local A&E to be assessed

@Isittimeforbed it is a pussy and has been bleeding a little bit, although I don't remember my first baby's going like that which is why I was worried, hopefully your right and it's just it coming away x

@MadameJosephine thank you I will give them a ring and see what they say and if they think she needs to be seen. She seems okay in herself tho x

Phone someone for advice, babies can be quite resilient but if it's infected then things can get worse very quickly. Nobody at all will judge you for seeking advice with such a young baby, my logic has always been that if I'm willing to ask on here then it's time to make a phone call. Better to waste your evening and be safe than wait and risk a poorly baby. Congratulations on your baby

A bit of bleeding is common when it separates. It doesn't look red or swollen around that area which is usually a sign of infection. If it's continually weeping pus that you're having to clean away that would be a concern, but little bits are very common and I can't see anything worrying in the picture. But obviously speak to someone if you're concerned and they can take a swab if necessary.

Just an update I've had it checked midwife has taken a swab and sent it of and told me if she becomes ill take her to the gp or shrop doc if it's out of hours
