Recovery from post partum haemorrage - nutritional help?

Hi all. Two days ago I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl (my 4th child), but the placenta didn't detach and I haemorraged. I went to theatre and lost quite a lot of blood. We are now home, everyone is wonderful, but I have four children to care for and feel really weak. They reluctantly let me leave hospital, but I'm finding it harder than I expected. As an ongoing health kick I would like to start making smoothies to start my day and wondered if anyone could recommend anything specifically for my current situation (anaemic and recovering generally). Fresh ingredients and perhaps powdered superfood things? I lost a fair bit of weight in my pregnancy from sickness so I'd like to avoid all this piling back on now too. Any thoughts?

Did they do a blood test before you left hospital/ I lost an awful lot of blood during my first labour and kept passing out. They discovered that my hg levels were so low that the best way to solve the problem was a blood transfusion. The difference was amazing. They reckoned it would have taken far too long to recover levels by way of supplements and diet.

Yes, they wanted me to have a blood transfusion yesterday but I felt ok and wanted to come home, so they let me go. Though at home with a newborn and 3 other children and I'm even struggling doing the stairs! I get one upstairs to read their bedtime story, and I need to lie down before I can read to them! I think I've missed my opportunity for a transfusion. I don't really know what they involve either....

It is worth asking about the possibility. When I had mine they just put a cannula in my arm and hooked me up to a bag ( or 3)! Took a couple of hours I think (was 16 years ago). The impact was immediate.

I assume you are taking a high dose of iron.

I'm afraid you need to rest. it will take a little for your blood to return to normal.
took me about a week of feeling fluey.

lot's of fluids, fresh fruit&veg (will also help with the constipation).
if you eat meat a nice steak.
