First period after birth - horrifically heavy, help!

My little boy is 10 weeks and yesterday evening I start my first period after having him.

I do not recall it being bad when I had the first one after my daughter (around 5 weeks after having her) but this one is absolutely horrific. I am going through a super tampon in less than an hour, to the point where I went through 4 sets of PJs last night and it was pouring down my legs (sorry if TMI).

I have been trying to get myself into work but there's just no way at the moment. I am going to try to get to the shops to buy some night pads to wear alongside the tampons to stop the leaking but surely this amount of bleeding is not normal!

It is still as bad this morning... so now 12 hours bleeding like this. Any advice, experiences, suggestions?

If you are soaking a pad in under and hour you need medical attention. Please call your GP

I haven't used a pad yet, only a super tampon as I don't have any pads in.

If it's pouring out it could be very dangerous. Try to get checked out asap.

Same thing. If your going through one an hour or less then get medical advice

As pp said, it’s not long since you gave birth so probably best to get checked out by your gp/midwife to make sure there are no underlying issues. Try not to panic though, flooding is a common issue and certainly was for me when my periods returned (12 months pp!) after my kids. It gradually got better but my periods are still heavier than they were pre-kids, and this is several years down the line. Get some super plus tampons (I would also go through a super tampon in an hour, SP are a lot more absorbent), and some pads to wear for leakage.

If I rang the doctor every time I soaked through a pad in an hour, they’d be getting regular monthly calls from me Wink

After 48 hours like this is settled down to what I consider normal... that was pretty scary and horrific though. I am just praying it's not the same next time!
