Hi there,

My baby is never satisfied after breastfeeding. He's not been for 3 weeks (since he was born). Any help would be appreciated...

What’s he doing? Are you trying both sides? Are you sure it’s hunger rather than wind or acid pain?

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for your question. We are here to help! What you are experiencing is very normal. It may be due to a number of issues including...

Normal :)

Firstly how do you know he’s not full? Because he’s still wanting more three seconds later? Or is there another reason?

They feed and feed - it’s called cluster feeding and it’s their way of stimulating demand - it’s putting the order in for next week basically.

Is baby gaining weight?
Is baby producing wet nappies?

If yes to both, all is probably well. Breastfeeding is HARD BLOODY WORK at the start, it really is. Look after yourself and this bit is just a stage you need to survive.

Have you seen the kellymom website? If not, go have a browse - it’s fabulous. Evidence based, non judgemental and very useful.

Pressed send to soon - of you feel here is a problem with feeding (baby not gaining or any other worry) then definitely talk to your HV and see if you can get some hands on support - local bf cafe or la lecheleague?

If you can explain the problem more people here might have advice too

Oh and it’s very normal for them to feed all evening in particular.

Anatidae · 28/11/2017 10:19

It is! Mine fed for 6 hours straight in an evening at that point...

I think it's pretty normal. Observe if it's not acid that you dc is experiencing otherwise it's normal for them to feed all evening.

We are also three weeks in here. DS seems happier in the morning and sleeps for a good amount of time between feeds. In the evening there doesn’t seem to be as much left and all bets are off! He will feed/cry all evening.

I’ve started expressing some of the morning milk to top him up before bed which seems to help.
