Help! Bad vaginal smell after birth

So I gave birth to my first baby 4 weeks ago and the lochia has stopped apart from some dregs but my god it stinks and seems to be getting worse not better! Literally doesn't even go away after bathing.
Can also smell it through my clothes and get the occasional twinging pain as if it's period pain.

Please help - getting freaked out now after reading stuff online about bad infections from gauze being stuck!
Not sure if I would get an emergency appointment for the doctors as seems silly if it's "normal" so seeing what people think as to whether I wait for the 6 week check to check it out.

no, you need an emergency appointment
check your temperature an if raised mention it when you ask for the appointment, as well as the pain

Sounds like an infection. I would make an appointment and not wait it out. Did you have stitches? I had a slightly infection and it cleared up easily but definitely get it checked you don't want to leave that area to chance 😬

Phone your GP first thing in the morning. It may be group b strep in which case you need antibiotics and possibly baby will too.

outputgap · 12/07/2017 23:56

Smell is a key sign of infection. You would absolutely not be wasting the GP's time to see them with this.

Are you signed off from your community midwife? Mine were very happy to be contacted with things like this, but ultimately for antibiotics I had to go to the GP.

You need to see the GP. Insist you get seen quickly.

I'd go to the doc if you can, probably just to reassure yourself but also because you know your body best.

Probably TMI but I found lochia/post lochia pretty stinky and felt like I could smell it the whole time (DH denied he could smell it). It was much like a menstrual smell. But less metallic and more (brace yourself) fleshy or sweet and bready.

My GP reassured me that if I had an infection (I had an EMCS) I'd have a fever/feel unwell.

Either way, better safe than sorry.

Thanks for quick replies guys. Yes I had long birth after being induced which ended in forceps and episiotomy but from looking down there can't see anything untoward - the stitches look nice and clean.
But yes will ring docs first thing tomorrow

I had this and had given myself BV from keeping the stitches clean! Never had it before but bloody hell it whiffed. Definitely see the go and ask to be swabbed.
