Baby 6 week check up weight loss and green stools.

I'm breast feeding my baby and she has been gaining weight brilliantly. I had 6 week check up today and the doctor weighed her 8oz lighter than the midwife last week! He said she looked very healthy and alert but that I need to now keep an eye on the weight. Im so worried now. Baby suffers from colic and as been having a couple of green poos a day (along with a couple of normal coloured) am I doing something wrong? Could one set of scales be wrong?
Please help!

Is it bright green poo?

chumpchange · 13/06/2017 21:00

Oh and yes, if it's a different set of scales then I wouldn't pay a huge amount of attention to it.

It varies in colour from dark greeny brown to a lighter green but not bright green. Just very worrying for me!

A book I found really helpful and easy to read was the breastfeeding mothers guide to making more milk. Really helpful guide as to how to know if you're producing enough. I found it really helpful to empower me a bit more when I was in a somewhat similar situation

Thank you I shall have to purchase it!

IIRC green poo in breastfed babies is usually due to a fore/hind milk imbalance. My DC1 had it at one stage. If you Google (sorry, am on phone or I'd look for some good links for you) you can find out more about it. If that's what it is it's a fairly simple fix.

Yes to the pp. My daughter had very green, frothy, watery poo at the same age though she was gaining steadily. It turned out that I had an oversupply issue which meant she was getting lots and lots of watery fore milk and very little fatty hind milk.

I looked into it and ended up "block feeding" her to sort it out. This involved feeding her on one side only for 4 or so hours, then switching to the other side for the next 4 to prompt the unused side to down-regulate supply. It was a bit uncomfortable at first being so full on the unused side (obviously you should express/feed at the first sign of blocked ducts or mastitis!) but I found my supply very quickly sorted itself out and her poo went back to normal colour and consistency within a week or two. I gradually reduced the amount of time on each side as my supply normalised and ended up just feeding on one side per feed until we stopped bfing at 10 months.

Jooni, that sounds very interesting. Did you find baby was very fussy, screaming and windy (she does a big burp but doesn't want to go back on?) I offer dummy after and she will suck that and eventually settle. I'll try just feeding on one side and using the other side to pump on them for a few days see how that goes! Gosh so stressful this breast feeding crap! I see why so many give up xx

Has she been checked for s tongue tie? Can often be the cause of failure to put on weight, colic and the green poo. I should add that not all doctors are great at recognising it so you may need to see a breastfeeding counsellor.

doleritedinosaur · 07/07/2017 00:33

How often is she pooing? & are they quite explosive? Is she squirming with effort of pooing?

That could also be CMPA from breastfeeding as well.

I also just popped onto suggest oversupply - really made a difference when I realised (though it was a few years ago now). Kelly Mom dot com has some useful advice as my HV was worse than useless!
