books - have you tried massaging the tummy - round the belly button in a clockwise direction? Works wonders for getting LO to poo.

Dog - gald you got the appointment with the SALT - try not to worry too much you can't be expected to know how to deal with it without help - and a 6 month delay probably isn't much - I have a relative whoo didn't speak at all until he was 6 - parents terribly worried etc but now doing GCSEs and you would never know he was a slow starter.

tink - both playhouses look good... I'd have trouble deciding...

stripey - good luck with the blocked duct - massaging has aways worked for me you have to be pretty rough though to get rid of it I find

spent the weekend putting this up www.wickentoys.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=pj313-414G fortunately a pressie from grandma DS1 loves it bloody hard work to assemble though!

fym - i want one of those! okay, not really, but if i were a kid i would. lucky ds1.

boob still all buggered up... dog, told dp about your suggestion - i think it's going to have to be massage... flippin' baby will take a bottle before six months. must resume some semblance of social life at some point...

hope you are all doing fine on this hideous murky morning (in dublin, anyway)

dog that you have time to read a book, that's brilliant! I used to love reading, and could never put a good book down, would literally go deaf to everything else around me - but since about month 6 of pregnancy, something happened to my brain... concentration levels or something... anyway, should really start reading while bf-ing instead of constantly cruising ebay etc! Laptops can be dangerous things.

Wow, I have just had a 90 minute nap with LO - was so tired after a busy weekend that I just couldn't motivate myself to get up instead - thought I would just have a bath with him when we both woke up. But amazingly, he is still asleep, and has given me time to bath, tidy up and now eat breakfast! I keep checking on him but he is away with the fairies. Usually only has an hour max at this time, but I don't mind how long he sleeps for this early in the day.

How's the duct this morning, stripey? tink I am sure Bracken is just waking up because it's a new environment; she'll probably start sleeping through again in a couple of days - !

Aaargh! Complete bummer of a morning here so far. Made the mistake of saying to DH how well behaved the boys have been this holiday and obviously jinxed myself!

First of all we were all woken by a huge thunder and lightning storm. (So loud it actually made the window frames rattle and the walls vibrate) I went in to check on the boys and sure enough they were there duvets pulled up to noses and huge terrified eyes peeping out! So brought them into my bed and ended up squished in the middle with a boy either side and a baby on top! Storm went on for ages, DH brought us all raisin toast and a drink, I fed DD then the boys (who are really tired for some reason) were put back to bed with a DVD to watch in the vain hope of getting them to have some more rest.

DD went back to sleep, as she does every morning, but was woken half a dozen times either by the boys coming in and out telling me about various fights they were having or by the screams and wails coming from their bedroom.

Finally got up and went to tell the boys to get up and dressed only to find their bedroom a total bombsite (they were supposed to be staying in bed!) and them having a full on scrap involving DS2 slamming DS1s head in the wardrobe door!

It has pretty much continued in that vein all morning and their lunch sat on the table for an hour because I said they couldn't come and eat it until they were washed, dressed and had tidied their room, but instead they chose to fight and scream at each other - again!

Have now told them they can both spend the rest of the day doing homework and reading/writing exercises and neither can have nintendo or computer time.

Think I might have shot myself in the foot though, as now I will have sit to the table with them both all afternoon - Doh!

Have just sent them upstairs to get their school bags while I feed DD (that'll be at least another hour of them fighting in their room then) and I need fortification - right quick, where did I put all those Easter Eggs?!

moose, you're scaring me, is that what I have to look forward to with my two little monsters darlings in a few years time?

I finished reading a book this afternoon - I've been reading faster since C was born than during my pregnancy, but it's probably a better idea to read while feeding in the daytime than at night.

Sorry elkie didn't mean to scare you. They're not always like that and to be fair they have been off school for a week and a half and its the first bust up - so overall not too bad.

Did descend into total Mummy meltdown though before DS2 fell asleep and DS1 did a lovely piece of written work for his literacy homework.

DS2 is a bit off/under the weather I think, he's very subdued and spacey as well as really clingy since he woke up. Really hope he's not coming down with something as we have a whole weekend away planned at his request for his birthday on Saturday.

Hope you are feeling better Stripey.

I have read a tonne of books since I had DD, so many I have now run out and am looking for new ones. Although I think reading 'siblings without rivalry' might be a good place to start!

ah, reading... i remember it vaguely. somehow can't concentrate - hope it's temporary... attention span too short at the moment even for tv, really

elkie, kind of a lazy reader, lots of crime fiction but also quite fond of tricksy american literature.

still all blocked up and headachey, stupid duct. am getting worried about mastitis now, might go to doc tomorrow to see if there's anything she can do. c hasn't been able to help, despite best efforts. she has been really sleepy today - but i swear she grew visibly last night, babygro tighter in the morning

moose, sorry about small boys playing havoc...

Hi all.

bit lost on thread, and not really time to catch up on it all. Hope your all well.

Esme bit of a weird day. As i've said before this bubba LOVES her sleep. especially her lunchtime nap. Naps around 12 ish to 2 ish. Today- totally dropped that nap, and wasnt even grouchy?!?! Then after her bath, did her usual of falling asleep on boob, then when i put her in her cot (shes now in her nursery in her cot from 7pm bedtime- i go to bed, and when i wake her for her feed i bring her into moses basket in our room, more for my ease than anything else) when went into cot, woke totally up. She is now sleeping with 1 arm out of swaddle and has been wide awake for 40 mins sucking her thumb. Am guessing as racket of suckling has stopped (on monitor) that shes now asleep! Shes so funny. Just a bizare day for her, as shes usually so predictable. I wonder if she is dropping the nap totally, or just didn't fancy it today!? Hmm.

3rd of 4 baby massage classses in the morning. We;re both enjoying them lots.

Left Esme for only 2nd time properly last night, with her daddy. Put her to bed, and met the OH's of OH's Team mates for dinner. Lovely Yummy food and a good natter, 8 of us in total. Then the other girls pushed on into town and i headed home to my babies! (OH my baby too! incase your thinking you missed something!?) They are all rather worse for wear today. Mwwwhahaha!

Had nice day today, OH usually has Wed off (only day of week!) Went for a Walk & a lovely Lunch.

Dog Isla sounds similiar to Esme in that is a sleepy baby. I often wake her to feed her due to throbbing boobs. Although Esme hasn't grasped the night time sleeping yet, don't get me wrong shes pretty darn good... only wakes about 3am for a quick 15 mins Slurp and doesnt need burping just goes straight back down, i think we're both pretty much still asleep! :-)

ohhh.. wanted to ask you ladies a Q. One of my friends (baby 3 weeks older than Esme) is really pleased with herself for tricking her bubba into taking a bottle of mixed expressed milk & formula. (she refused formula) I didn't want to ask her (he was too happy) but does anyone have any idea why the heck she is doing that? I just don't see why??? I know she doesn't want to put her onto formula totaly, she, like me, wants to feed until onto solids, i can only assume she is trying to tank her up to get her to sleep through the night and thinking formula will work? Hmm...

Right, better go... Rumbles in the Tummy Department!

Don't really have a favourite type of book - just go by recommendation or if something looks/sounds interesting.

Have recently read The House at Riverton and The Secret Garden by Kate Morton, a couple of Cecilia Aherns for quick reading and light relief, several Philip Pullmans, Wicked by Gregory Maguire also read quite a few dog related fiction and non-fiction books.

i second getting DH to aid in the blocked duct it works.

its so very lovely here today. i started running today! felt good and even though its been a year, not nearly as hard as i thought it was going to be. it was by myself too. it was nice.

missjackson you gotta love those unexpected moments when baby sleeps long enough for you to take a moment.

moose i read your 'fortification' as 'fornication' and said out loud 'go on girl' only to realize i read it wrong. made me laugh though after reading your morning. boys, eh?

elkie i read loads but can only maintain concentration on books that i have already read... but i only keep the ones i would re-read. i always recommend 'Life of Pi'. just a lovely story about an indian boy stranded on a lifeboat for 112 days and his adventure, complete with a hyena, a zebra and tiger. Umberto Eco has a couple of good ones about The Templars and that sort of stuff. 'Foucault's Pendulum' and 'Baudolino'. i just finished 'Pandora' again by Anne Rice. her vampire series is a good story and easy to read. actually, all her stuff is a good read.

sripey get well girl. argh to cold's that won't go anywhere!

ray DD never sleeps in her crib and if i want her to lay down in bed to nap, i have to feed her, change her diaper, and then lay down in bed with her on the second boob till she falls asleep. Esme is just moving on to a new way of doing things... DD is constantly keeping me on my toes to new changes.

ok, i'm off. its far too beautiful today to be inside. off for a stroll throught he woods! ciao for now ladies.

rray - i find expressing a real PITA so if she's like me it may be so she can go out once in a while . Haven't done that here yet in desperation as still on the virgin gut theory (so only breast milk - nothing else) however as DS1 shoved a bit of ham in his mouth recently I don't think that one's going to last much longer!! (I'm not a militant breastfeeder BTW, each to their own just thought I'd try it as am not going to BF longer term - will stop at 6 months. DS2 does seem less windy than DS1 who had some formula in his first week - probably just coincidence though!!)

stripeywoollenhat · 15/04/2009 21:07

dog - i wouldn't try to discourage the thumb sucking since it's a self soothing thing and will help her to entertain herself/go to sleep alone etc. at least that's what i tell myself when c starts slurping on her hands in the middle of the night she's not thumb sucking, she chews on her whole hand, has been for a couple of weeks now. she was sucking her thumb on her twelve scan though...

rray, c has turned into a totally different baby in the last couple of weeks, i think they do a lot of developing at three months - esme is about that now, right?

chefswife - you were thinking of getting the ikea fish mobile, weren't you? really can't recommend it enough, c breaks into a huge grin every time she sees it

Fab news on the rolling fym - is a wonderful feeling isn't it when they do something new. I remember when DD first rolled on the bathroom floor and I ran down the hall shouting DH going "Quick, she'd rolled...!" and DH arrived saying she'll never do it again... and the minute he got through the door there she went, over again! I was so proud of her that day. You've got an early one there though haven't you?? DD was about 16wks and I remember that being early. It really is a huge 'first' though I think... the beginning of the end of the helpless stage. Can't wait for DS to do it.

I used to love books elkie, but just don't get a chance to read for pleasure anymore. I read tonnes and tonnes for uni, mostly skim reading but probably around 100 books and loads of journal articles just since September so only squeeze in the odd handed-on magazine for pleasure. That (apart from sleep, relaxing holidays and a decent sex life!) is my biggest miss since I had DD.

Stripey I think you should get down to the docs too - maybe even late night surgery if there is one in Dublin? We have one at the local hospital, it's kind of a stop gap between GP and A&E. I've never had mastitis but I have heard it comes on hard and fast if not treated. Have you tried a search on here for other threads about how to unblock the duct?

Glad you had a nice day to make up for your lat day out Dog - I always find my two so much easier when I get out of the house. Just a shame we have to come home again!! Always a tantrum as we get through the door from hunger/tiredness, and that's just me

MM - you are scaring me too! Although I know exactly what I've got in store - I remember the sibling fights from my own childhood all too vividly!

Ray DS also changing a lot lately, but today he had his first long nap during the day - 2.5hours, was heavenly.
