had a reasonable night with Toby, learned loads from docs yesterday about best way to control a temp which I didn't know so that was why he probably got so bad you guys probably know this but just in case (it was news to me)
as soon as fever is found, double dose both nurophen and calpol together and monitor then if you need to keep dosing then alternate calpol then nurophen every 4 hours - which I did know but I wasn't setting an alarm to keep it going through the night which we should have been doing from Friday night, did it last night and he only woke us once at 4am for milk, apparently it also take on average 4 days for a fever to break but all the bottles say see a doc after 3 days but they aren't too fussed till after the 4th day... anyway not rocket science but I haven't been doing the best for him neither of my boys have had fever since they started nursery in Jan so this is all horribly new to me

anyway from our point of view Toby doing much better today, no temp but a bit of a space cadet - I guess its all the drugs!

he is also teething so, now I can be rational about it all, wondering if the cold he has and the 4 canine teeth he is cutting could have caused the problems - why does every baby book say teething doesn't cause bad nappies, vomiting or high temp? or maybe it is the 'cuts' it causes in their mouths that can become slightly infected??

fifisboys · 14/04/2009 20:59

Hi everyone....(waves manically)

We've finally managed to get a new pc so i thought i would drop by to say hello if you'll have me back????

becklespeckle · 15/04/2009 00:16

Hi all, hope you had a good Easter (can't believe I've been gone too long and missed the bunny-eared smileys!). All is well in the Beckle household currently (touch wood) and we're enjoying the holidays! Am nearing the end of a 2ww, something I never thought I'd do again, due to DH cocking up a total contraception faliure, fingers crossed for a BFN at the end of the week and I can re-start my pills! Suspect they were what was making me spot before though so may need to see docs and get them changed. It has made us seriously talk about babies though as DH regularly makes 'jokes' about having another, we both agree that if our financial situation was different we would have another so DH is not going to get the snip for now just in case we win the lottery

Arcadie nice new thread at last, yay!

Welcome back Fifi! How are you?

Hi to Prammy too, are you joining us?

Caz, my DD is also into her B words and uses all the same ones as yours, she also does:
boo - book
bu - bum
boobies -
She will also do hair, eyes and ears which is cute!

Skid, housework...I'm sure some of these people who say they clean their toilet 15 times a day, hoover 4 times throughout and polish the TV stand twice a day are lying. Honestly, have they nothing better to do?!!! (MN, children....err MN?) . I hoover daily, sometimes twice, often give the toilet and sink a quick clean each day and wipe over the cooker and kitchen sides. I dust every couple of days but not the skirting boards unless I see dust on them, usually I give DD a duster and she sort of does it! Major clean of bathroom and kitchen gets done once a week unless it looks like it needs doing before.

Wizz, that robot vacuum looks fab! Where does the dust and fluff go though???

Clara, we also get tantrums putting DD into the pushchair, not when going from home but from anywhere else (particularly if she has been running about outside and I want to put her in it). She is better going into the Quinny than the big 3 wheeler but I think that is because she is sat up more in it. We also get tantrums with the carseat and various other things depending on her mood!

Buzzy superb that your DD2 will use the toilet! I am not even thinking about that for at least another year - toilet training must be my least favourite thing about raising children shudder. You are not the only one with a mischeivious LO either, DD gets into everything she can although is more nosey than destructive.

Insy, how is Toby now? Glad he was doing a bit better today, it's so scary when they have a high fever and are poorly . I confess that I too sleep in DD's room when she is really hot. Luckily DD has a bed in her room which saves me sleeping on the floor but have slept on the DSs floor and also on the end of DS2's bed when he has been poorly. I like to stay close.

Arcadie · 15/04/2009 09:19

HI BT - FB inbox misbehaving and I can't remember what time we said but I'll be setting off soon - so hope to see you at some point. Car is a Green Ford mondeo. I'll be the one being very cross with her curly haired son for killing his cousins hamster this morning.... Ohhhhhh

claraquack · 15/04/2009 10:03

Hi everyone, hope you had a good Easter. We were busy and had lots of fun and loved all the sun but dd2 been on and off poorly so not getting much sleep.

insy dd2 also had a really high temperature on Friday night, got quite worried about it as her breathing was really shallow and rapid but she was much better by Saturday and now just has a bad cough. Thanks for the info, it's useful to hear what dr's recommend when you can't be bothered don't have the time to take them to your own!

arcadie at hamster killing! How did that happen?

insywinsyspider · 15/04/2009 10:29

beckle have you tested? I always stay close when they have temp, have been sleeping on air bed, dh has offered to do it as obviously he's be more comfortable but I'm hopeless as I'd be in and out of the room all night, I do trust him but I just like to know myself that they are alright. Anyway Toby made good recovery, no temperature now and is at nursey today as he always eats more there so I'm hoping that'll he'll catch up from the weekend, he hates the antibiotics tho, why do they always make them taste so foul personally I say make it chocolate flavoured and lace it with sugar if it makes them take it and get better who cares

buzzy forgot to say timed toilet thing is that I watched ds1 and know that after a big drink he goes for a wee about 40 mins later so I'd just schedule a toilet stop in, I'd also take him regularly throughout the day, before we left house, when we arrived somewhere, if he hadn't 'asked' (he was only signing then) for a while... I was lucky tho I was on mat leave so could do it, haven't had opportunity with ds2 yet as working 4 days a week but hopefully it'll be a lovely summer and I'll get him running round butt naked in garden ds1 was about 2yrs before he could reliabily tell me when he needed to go and we went completely backwards when he started nursery in January but he's much more settled now and dry again, hoping the new baby won't put him off track again, still not dry at night, I have no idea how you 'do' that one or if you do just wait... got one friend with a 6yr old who is still waiting for he ds to go through the night so not sure what the best track is on that one

clara hope dd's cough improves soon, docs advice was very interesting as I was just following the bottle, I also didn't realise medised had gone up to over 6yrs only, I used togive that to ds1 all the time!

arcadie what happened??

buzzybee · 15/04/2009 11:19

Glad to hear DS is better Insy. I didn't know that about the double dosing either. Does it also apply to adult migraines I wonder? I've only had one but it was horrible!

I can give you my tuppence worth on being dry at night as have 7 yo who's been dry since 3.5. I don't think it works just to wait (that's only my opinion of course). We just decided to go cold turkey after she'd been dry during the day about 4 months. Stopped all drinks after 6pm, insisted on loo stop immediately before bed (teeth and toilet is still a regular routine!) and put on a plastic liner. We only needed this last thing for about 1 month and she very quickly came right. Never bothered with expensive pull-ups.

Good to see you all back, I was missing you!

insywinsyspider · 15/04/2009 12:26

buzzy ds1 went into pull ups at 20months - he was in reusables but as soon as he had pants he'd cry about them being cold and wet and we didn't think he was old enough to get through the night. every morning his pull ups are wet, we stop drinks at 6pm (he now has milk drink downstairs - that was a battle) then we do bath, story and last trip to loo before putting his nappy on, we 'lift' him when we go to bed otherwise he leaks out of pull up, he's always been a heavy wetter. I know if we take him out of everything he'll wake up if he is wet as first thing he does in moning is take his nappy off, go to loo and then come into us but not sure if that will just upset his sleep, only just got ds's in same room so not sure I'm ready to try it!

double dosing does work for us too - I knew that from sports injures I'd always take nurophen and paracetamol together I just didn't know it was safe for babies too

just heard that the 'bird man' has been into nursery to show the children an owl and birds of prey - glad Toby went in today now he'd have loved that, the only thing that made him smile this weekend was sitting by our patio window signing bird

Wizzska · 15/04/2009 12:31

Hi all. Hope you had a good easter.

We seem to be over the teething worst at the moment, and also sickness bug has subsided thankfully. Hopefully we can have some good health for a while. Clairey, BT, hope teething troubles get better for your DSs too.

Beckle, the dust goes in a little compartment which you have to empty after each use. It will go back to its docking station when the battery is low or it needs to be emptied. It is a small price to pay when you don't actually have to do any of the work.

Has anyone seen the mumsnet mates section. It seems MN is going all FB and letting you show your photos privately to mates. I'm going to play with it and add you lot. Anyone else? I've not noticed it before, but have I just not been very observant?

insywinsyspider · 15/04/2009 12:32

beckle do you really do that much cleaning? I manage... (deep breath and try not to look like a complete slob as I admit this) hoovering once a week, bathrooms once a week (maybe but if honest wipe sink and clean toilets once a week and do proper clean every two weeks) dusting... ermmm sporadically and mostly the bits you can see like TV and cleaning mirrors and windows where ds's have licked them, I wipe kitchen sides and sink every day, major clean every two weeks and have just started cleaning fridge out every week - honestly my house doesn't look too bad but I'm now advoiding cleaning threads I'm sure we have this conversation antenatally, am I alone in my lack of housekeeping?

Wizzska · 15/04/2009 12:41

Beckle, you are a cleaning superwoman! I only manage to give the house a good going over once a week. Obv. clean the kitchen and tidy up toys daily. Insy, looks like you're more my style of cleaning.

OK so I'm going to post a picture of DS on my profile and it should only be viewable to you guys.

claraquack · 15/04/2009 13:29

insy I have to reassure you that no, you are completely normal - that sounds about what I do. Definitely don't hoover more than once a week and dh does it because I hate it. Also dd1 is terrified of the hoover so can only do it when she's not around...

Oh and (whispers) I still use medised all the time with dd2, it's too good to ditch!

On toilet training and being dry at night, I suspect this is mainly down to luck/genetics. DD1 was dry at night before she was out of nappies in the day - she was potty trained at about 2.5 years but had been dry at night for a couple of months previous to that. I was too scared to take her out of nappies at night for a while but since I did (at about 2.6 months) she has never once had an accident at night. She is basically a camel and only needs to pee 2/3 times a day. I used to be like that...before I had children....

Now I doubt I will not be so lucky with Martha!

claireybeeinmyeasterbonnet · 15/04/2009 14:22

Ah I don't feel such a slattern on here! I do hoover downstairs most days though, I find we get crumbs etc all over the floor (even if we only eat in dining room???) and I can't stand getting stuff stuck to my feet as I walk around. I probably need to clean more than those of you that work do though spending more time at home must mean more mess!

Am making good progress with training the kids though, dd loves doing the washing up and often does the breakfast stuff for me and ds loves the hoover so always tries to help me-once he is a bit bigger I'll happily hand the job over to him . Thing I don't do very ofetn is dusting, I hate it!

BouncingTurtle · 15/04/2009 14:32

Hello all!!

I've just been having a lovely morning, with the lovely Arcadie and her ds and dd! Her ds is totally lovely (though in lots of trouble over hamster incident, I'll let her fill you in there!) and her dd is so sweet and kept giving my ds cuddles. Ds wasn't quite sure what to make of them!
We had a fantastic time at soft play, and we the dcs had a great time on the big slides! Ds and Arcadie's dd were giggling as we were going down with mummies whooping away

Wizz, AFAIK the mumsnet mates thing has always been there, but I never bothered with it because I didn't know how well it would
cope with name changes. And since some of us like to get our festive names on quite regularly just thought it might be a bit of a faff!

I think DS is getting better, he spent the entire night in his cot last night.

Welcome back Fifi!!! Good to see you again

With regards to toilet training, I'm considering doing Cod's boot camp method, probably Summer 2010 when he is about 2.5.
I might change my mind before then as I'm hoping I'll either be very pregnant or with a newborn then!

claireybeeinmyeasterbonnet · 15/04/2009 14:32

Can't see a pic Wizz...do I need to change back to claireybee to see it?

Wizzska · 15/04/2009 15:23

Clairey, I put you on as both names so you should see it. D'oh, is it not working? Bouncing - as I suspected, I've not noticed it before. But that might be because I rarely look at my profile pages and usually only to change my name to something more seasonal.

spiralqueen · 15/04/2009 16:11

Just found your thread and wanted to say hi

My dd born 16/12/07 ? a major surprise to me and DH but very welcome. First thing this morning was pretty typical and is a bit of an introduction to us?

4am ?DD wakes wanting bottle. Hand bottle to her, stagger back to bed
6am ? DH gets up and sets off for work. Try to catch a bit more sleep before getting up. 7am ? dd chatting to her teddies in bed ? swiftly up/shower before she runs out of conversation
7.20 ? am presented with 1st book of the day to be read.

8.00 ? both dressed and downstairs. DD tackling a bit of floor sweeping with little broom. She?s developed a love of cleaning which hasn?t come from us - am trying not to take it as a comment on my slatternly ways . Try to get washing load in machine while dd helpfully tries to take it out.
8.30 - Out of the house and have only read 3 stories ? something of a record. DD chants name of best friend most of the way to nursery. Gets to nursery, ignores best friend initially then they compare clothes and trot off to the book corner together.

9.00 ? Work ? put professional head on and tackle day?s must do pile (aim for list but usually ends up as pile instead). DH rings to check dates he needs to book off for trip away. Grab sometime to check out MN.

fifisboys · 15/04/2009 17:02

Hi...thanks for having me back

I've got no chance of catching up now but will have a read over the last week or so to see whats been going on.
Ive missed not being able to have a 'chat' about the ds's with people that are in the same situations as me so im glad i can do that now.

Just a bit of an update from me....
Ethan is still a non-walker..am i the only one in this situation? He walks fine holding on to my hands etc and pushing his walker round and will stand on his own but will just not take those steps alone!!!
Sleep wise..no problems at all. Bedtime is still around 6.30-7pm and will normally go till about 4, quick drink then asleep again till 7 so i have been really lucky.
He's also going off milk and im struggling to get it down him at times.

Hope everyone is doing ok..will be good to catch up a bit and join back in!!!

BouncingTurtle · 15/04/2009 18:05

Fifi - yes I know a couple of babies around ds's age who will walk quite happily even if they only holding a finger... but let go of that finger and down they go!

Apparently I didn't walk until I was 18mo! I was lazy apparently

fifisboys · 15/04/2009 19:58

I was 11 month, dp was 17 month and ds1 was 14 month so a bit of a mix..im going to make the most of having a non-walker.

So is there anything major thats been going on the last few months?
Is anyone else pg ot ttc..i know insy is pg.

Arcadie · 15/04/2009 20:24

Ahhhh so much to catch you up on but first things first.
Spiralqueen you are most welcome - how nice that you've found us. I am Arcadie - try to imagine me as a 6'2" leggy blonde with a stunning sense of humour, impeccable dress sense and cool unflappable exterior. (Not a slightly dumpy, mouse brown ex-teacher with a fuse as short as my DD.

OP posts:
Caz10 · 15/04/2009 20:31

Oh Arcadie, I am so jealous of you being able to call yourself an ex teacher!!

hi fifisboys, definitely make the most of a non walker I would say - dd is only up on her feet in the last few weeks, later than some on here, but it has definitely made things more difficult! Although having said that, other things are easier, like today I met a friend at the beach, we plonked the LOs down and off they toddled - easy!

Def no TTC here - although it is something we are thinking of - but I am still not keen tbh - will do it eventually but would like a full nights sleep first!!

Oh sorry just reading back, and didn't see you there spiralqueen - Hello!!! Your mornings sound like mine! Are you FT at work, how are you finding it? I'm applying to go 4 days from the autumn and just can't wait!

Speaking of which am meant to be working just now...

Arcadie · 15/04/2009 23:07

BT Thanks for a lovely morning - we all had a fantastic time and it was just what we needed after a weekend of decorating misery ( hence no posts from me in a while) and hamster calamity.

Hamster story can be found here We have buried said hamster. We have impressed upon DS that getting up and wrecking the house will end up with him visiting smackonthebottom.com (not a real website)

And now back to put the lino down

OP posts:
Arcadie · 15/04/2009 23:29

And Caz10 becoming an ex teacher physically a lot easier than becoming a teacher. Emotionally..... not sure.

OP posts:
buzzybee · 16/04/2009 11:51

Goodness Arcadie I would have been furious (sadly I'm not know for being the most tolerant mum in the world...). Especially after he'd been repeatly warned not to touch. Your poor niece. I seem to remember something similar happening to one of my friend's hamsters when I was a kid - they seem to be particularly sensitive animals, quite easily killed...

LOL at the camel comparison clara!!
