July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

my latch is fien,i tink its my baby, she sucks it in and out sumtimes...ahh i cnt wait for her to smile at me

tips for how to introduce her to the moses, right now she is co-sleeping

ichef · 20/08/2008 12:57

hi everyone can't cacth up as there's too much going on here hope everyone is well

mummy2bsoon i suffered as well with both dd and ds1 and to be honest the only think that made it better was time, not v good advice I know but honest, lansinoh did help a bit and also camomile compress but it will get better.

here all is fine ds2 is growing loads and getting cuter by the minute dd has been a bless and v helpful with him but ds1 still quite jealous i just keep telling myself he'll get over it, fingers crossed!

taking ds2 to my work tomorrow so everyone can see him, that should be fun.

hope everyone is good.

mummy2bsoon · 20/08/2008 13:04

how logn shud i let her feed on oen side then?

FenLondon · 20/08/2008 13:11

mummy2bsoon - moses basket - try swaddling before putting her down, the shock of a cold basket wakes our girl up unless she's already deep in sleep.

isaidno · 20/08/2008 15:52

mummy2bsoon - I would say 30 mins on one side is long enough. Is she still sucking rhythmically and swallowing after that time? She may well be only comfort sucking which will not do your sore nipples any good.
Poppy generally only has one breast at a time although quite often she will be hungry again within half an hour so I offer the other breast then. Every baby is different and your body will adjust your milk supply accordingly.

mummy2bsoon · 20/08/2008 16:11

suckin aND swolling...hmmm

CilC · 20/08/2008 17:20

Oh poor you mummy2b! I think it sounds like your little one is comfort sucking which may explain the cracked nipples. I really think it would help to get some advice from nct (or similar). It is amazing how being slightly off when it comes to bf position can really hurt your boobs!
I sometimes do both - but usually only one for about 20 minutes. It used to be much longer but the babies get better and more efficient at feeding. Your boobs are usually a good guide. It takes a while but getting in tune with them is more useful that timings etc.

Disney - how are you going? Things sound like they are improving for you and Sam. I had a big hormonal night last night - very teary/yelled at everyone and tbh irrational. Think it was hormones (and maybe the grey weather) as nothing really upsetting me... but we all get those days!

Happy Birthday Sweetkitty!

Please let me know how cranial osteopath goes - worth a try if it works. Don't really get how or why it would work...

sweetkitty · 20/08/2008 17:22

We are usually a side at a time unless as isaidno says she's unsettled then I would offer the second boob.

I agree that 30 mins is enough, is she doing the ravenous sucking at the start then it calms down to the flutter sucking, then it's like it's falling asleep then wake up and realise boob is not there and suck for comfort IYSWIM?

It's so hard to say though as every baby is SO different I have BF two very different babies.

Peanut73 · 20/08/2008 19:44

Happy Birthday for tomorrow SK!

Minkus · 20/08/2008 19:56

NotAnOtter did you say 6 at home???? 6 children? Are you PaulaYates/ButterflyMcQueen with a name change or another one of our megamums?

Minkus · 20/08/2008 19:56

Minkus · 20/08/2008 20:18

Also, who was it whose dh had suffered a couple of fits- so sorry, I can't remember who it was but I do hope that he is feeling better and that they haven't happened again.

RUMPEL · 20/08/2008 20:44

It was MIN Minkus (DH) he is on meds now isn't he?

Calvin booked in for cranialsacral therapy tomorrow at 12.30 - fingers x it helps or I may have to have a frontal lobotomy to stop my brain from imploding!!!! Arggg!!!!

SWEETKITTY of your sleep enjoy tomorrow.

minipinkscottish · 20/08/2008 20:53

hi there notanotter - welcome to the 6 kids club - me too

OP posts:
ponto · 20/08/2008 21:27

I always offer both sides - she has one, then when she comes off I burp her, change her nappy and offer the other side. With dd1 I used to keep offering the first side until there was no more left, but with dd2 I just switched over halfway through. Dd2's feeds therefore took only 10 mins, whereas dd1 took about an hour. They both put on weight at the same rate, and I know which feeding regime I preferred! I personally think that the obsession with making sure the baby gets the hindmilk is not worth worrying too much about - I was told that it comes through after the first couple of minutes, though I'm not sure whether that's right.

disneystar · 20/08/2008 21:42

can i ask your opinion on fenugreek please?

NotAnOtter · 20/08/2008 21:48

sorry Minkus i am the woman previosly known as those other ladies - this is my long time moniker

ds1 has been a delight today

we have had a great day infact including splashing out on a load of petit bateau stuff and not getting charged for some of it hoorah!!

TJuice i NEED to know the name of any shops i can access online where you buy Elodies stuff - her clothes and hats ( i am a bit of a hat freak) are gorgeous

sweetkitty · 20/08/2008 22:10

I knew it couldn't last B has had hardly any sleep today and is still up tonight, she's not gone longer than an hours stretch today even less than that I think. For long periods of it she was been very alert watching everyone around her but now she is overly tired and have offered countless boobs she takes them but then falls asleep quickly unlatches but then wakes up again. Hopefully she will sleep loads tonight (fingers and everything crossed)

Compared to DD2 though B is a breeze if she was my firstborn she would be great, DD2 is driving me mad with her tantrums everything is NO right now and she won't leave B alone, she adores her thats great but sometimes she is a wee bit too excited with her. I am thinking of moving her bed into the naughty corner.

Sorry having a moan

Notanotter - so you are butterfly mcqueen then? you have to make it more clear remember we are a sleep deprived lot in here!

Rumpel - I have been getting little smiles too they are great, best of luck for tomorrow hope it sorts your little man out. I bet he is the most placid toddler ever though once he gets rid of whatever is bothering him he will be great.

Right off to bed now to BF and hopefully the child will sleep.

cass66 · 20/08/2008 22:31

Hi girls. need some advice. any one any experience of very sicky babies?? Edward seems to vomit thin milky puke after most feeds, sometimes straight after if I don't burp him quickly enough, sometimes with a burp, and often a while after when sitting or lying or upright on me (straight down my cleavage usually!).

sometimes it seems like he pukes his entire feed, although he's not ravenous again after so he must have kept some down. he seems to be growing ok and is happy enough (has slept most of today). he's 6 weeks tomorrow.

I guess this is normal, but my other 2 weren't sicky at all. need reassurance, I guess. being sleep deprived strips me of all reason and common sense sometimes!

purplejennyrose · 20/08/2008 23:00

well dd1 had reflux which started at 6 weeks - but she did basically projectile vomit - great big 'gushes' that would hit the floor, plus she was very unsettled, wouldn't lie flat, had to be held upright, and didn't gain 'enough' weight.so it doesn't sound like that too much, maybe 'just a sicky baby'...not nice though, is it.bibs and muslins everywhere!

CilC · 21/08/2008 07:17

I have a puker this time around also. He tends to do it when lying down - even after being burped. Agree...lots of muslins! He is putting on weight though...
Agree about hind milk obsession, from what I have been told usually comes in first few minutes. If your baby is putting on weight then you are usually doing fine!
For some reason Rafferty did not sleep last night...hmmm... did not cry so much, he just did not settle. Very naughty, got up at 2 and said to husband over to you! I then went and hoped into DD's bed. She wriggled more! So now on the couch, but have not been able to sleep. Infact don't feel all that tired...just wait until 3pm today, thenit will hit me!

TJuice · 21/08/2008 09:09

morning ladies

hope you are all doing well.
i am feeling up and down as we had to go to the hospital to get the results of elodie's tests yesterday and one of her kidney's has impaired functioning. so we have to go back for tests in three months. There is a possibility that they may remove it. in the meantime, i have to give her antibiotics every day against urinary tract infections.

the good news is that she is flourishing - gaining weight, developing, good natured etc etc. you wouldn't think anything was wrong but she does have a bit of a distended tummy which is related to the condition.

its just horrible having this question mark above her health.

the weird thing is that i haven't really told any RL friends (just been very vague about it) because I don't want to deal with the constant questioning and sympathy which makes me feel more nervy. Does that sound messed up?? Its a small city and I have a couple of friends, who although lovely, do tend to chat everyone's business. And I hate bumping into people who ask about things that have happened to me, when I haven't told them (last year's miscarriage for example). Anyway, gossip is the least of my problems right now . . .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY; SWEET KITTY!
Hope you have a fabulous day xoxo

Good luck with your appointment today, Rumpel. Hope it helps.

re. boobs and sides - elodie gets one side, which she drains in about 5 mins. then she has some of the other side, after about 15-30mins. she has been through spells where she gets both, one immediately after the other and drains them both.

re. sleeping - we always wake her around 10.30 for her last feed and count the hours after that as the ones towards her "sleeping through" if you know what i mean.

but i wonder if i should just let her sleep and see what happens. she seems to always wake between 3 and 4 in the morning.

notanotter - thank you! Her clothes are from all over the place. My mum sends a lot from the UK and she tends to go to Pumpkin Patch and Baby Gap. When I buy her stuff, I buy H&M (the brown dungarees and the flowery dress) and from second-hand places for vintage handknits. I also love www.etsy.com for handknits and hats. Just type in "baby hat" and there's tons of beautiful handmade hats.
Danish kid style is quite distinct though - they like those mad print rompers and babygros by Nanoou, Katvig and Småfolk. Will try and find webshops.

CilC · 21/08/2008 09:34

Morning TJuice
I know what you mean about sympathy... but I am still really sorry for little Elodie, and for you too dealing with the unknown... Great news that she is flourishing though. My little experience of the healthcare system and feedback from my husband who worked over there a few years ago is that they are very thorough. Hope that helps...

Must agree, I love Elodie's clothes and hats! I loved dressing Tabitha and still do. Little boys do have nice clithes...but it is just not the same! I bought Tabitha some beautiful clothes when last in Copenhagen - can't recall the name of the shop (it was central but not on the main mall) and the brands included bombibitt...

Oh well had better go and do some washing. There seems to be so much more lately!

Take care!

disneystar · 21/08/2008 09:49

tjuice big hugs for you
samuel only has 1 kidney so does my charlie who 7 urinary infections can be more often and antibiotics are a must really
ive always been told they have to drink more often than normal to keep the kidney flushed to keep the toxin levels low
