Sorry looking for some help
my 5 week old every time I put him in next to me starts grunting , lifting his legs up , and his arms - often with eyes closed
when I hold him he sleeps on me fine though? And doesn’t make the noise during the day
any advice.
should I be picking him up to sooth him? Feed him b? During the night ?
but then would get absolutely zero sleep as it seems to be most of the night

Grunting is perfectly normal at this age. If he’s fed and not unsettled i would just leave him. Sometimes laying your hand gently on their tummy can help them go into a deeper phase of sleep though, which can be helpful.

I recommend Babycalming by Caroline Deacon if you want some tips Smile

@BunnyRuddington aw thank you. Yeah he isn’t crying and often eye closed but looks as it straining almost and grunting quite loudly! And then lifting both legs up to his chest. But not crying at all. I feel bad leaving him but otherwise I wouldn’t slee at all all night . It’s often post feed so I know he has had milk .
do they grow out of it? Thanks so much

Hi! New Single Father here to a two month old - i’m almost certain grunting is pretty normal like babies just make weird noises really! as long as they’re breathing and feeding that’s what counts!

You got this!

BunnyRuddington · 09/08/2025 07:39

Yeah they do grow out of it. They can be noisy little buggers though can’t they? Try the have on the tummy trick rather than lifting them for another feed. It won’t do LO any harm to be in their crib if they’re awake but not crying.

@BunnyRuddington oh great thanks so just lift them into their tummy to try sooth them?
yeah ur right - surely he would cry etc if he was hungry.
wonder why the grunting is just at nignt ? Why do they grunt ? Do you know

thanks again

Newborns are so noisy, just ignore unless screaming, they will soon let you know if they are unhappy.

You just gently lay a hand in their tummy whilst they are lying in their crib. No need to move it lift them as this can disturb them rather than settle them. After a while of having your hand there they usually drift into a deeper sleep.

No idea why they grunt, some of them just do!

I feel your pain, my LO has done this since the early days and is still doing it at 14 wks. Along with the legs lifting in to air so bottom and lower spine is off the bed like a prawn! Sometimes he tips over 😂

The grunting is so loud and if all starts at 4.30/5am and continues until we get him up at 7. The hand on tummy trick works but only for a few mins before it needs repeating so we’re not getting any sleep during this stretch :( which is really affecting me.

I have read it’s normal but I’d love to know what’s causing it. I think it’s his bowels/feeling windy, and sometimes I feel the wind popping under my hand when doing the tummy trick, but why does it only happen when he’s in his cot I wonder. Like yours, mine is fine sleeping flat on my lap before putting him down.

Our LO did this ALL night last night. He was asleep but zero sleep for mum and dad! When will it end 😭
