This sounds and looks pretty normal, but there’s a huge variation in babies. It’s important to learn what’s normal for him so you can notice any significant changes.

Babies can look like they’re straining even with soft poos because they don’t know how to coordinate their movements yet. Pooing is a skill they need to learn!

Talk to your Health Visitor or GP if you’re still worried.

Yep sounds very normal. 5 week olds don't know what poo is or what doing a poo is. They can't think "this one feels like a big one/hard one so I'll put some more effort in!" or "I might need a poo in a bit, but there feels like there is only a teeny bit there now!" They simply push when they get the feeling. As adult you know some come easily and some don't...they can't decide what kind it is! If you are tired you probably keep pushing if the urge is there because you know it's better out than in! They may push and then fall asleep if it isn't uncomfy!

Very normal!

Perfectly normal, both the size and the straining! It won't be long at all until they get much bigger than that and run out the nappy and all the way up his back. That's a fun stage 😬
