Hi all,

My son, born two months ago, was born with three toes on each foot and two fingures on his right hand are fused together

Has anyone had this experience?

This is the first occurence in both families
The consultant could not tell us what could have caused it but refered DS to plastic surgeon to see if there is anything they can do

Wow VishR, i have to say the same! Finally i found a thread about something i was born with. My left foot has only four toes and its about 2cm shorter than the other one. Im almost in my thirties now and when i was little the doctors were predicting that the lenght difference will be about 6-10cm and i would have to go thru surgery. Couple years ago i went to see a specialist orthopedist who does the lenght correction surgeries. At first i thought he is going to stretch my shorter leg. But he said in this case, its better to make the other one (the healthy one) shorter and cut the femur - which is quite a big surgery that takes a long recovery. Something in me told me not to go for it and didnt want to mess with the healthy leg. Couple days ago i visited a doctor i was visiting since i was little - he told me i made a good decision, because over the years, my body adjusted to the difference and the difference is visible only if measured from the hips. But measuring from the belly button he found out that my hips adjusted to it and im quite walking straight even barefoot. I have been very active in sports since i was little, never really limited or anything, which im really thankful for. But once i got older it made me think - did anyone think about having a plastic surgery adding a fake toe? Would that be a good idea? When i was a kid the other kids used to laught at the fact i got a toe missing, altrought its not a big deal for me, i just felt it might be something to do for my future kids, so they friends wont bother them with it. Any options guys? Best of luck to everyone in this thread!

To; blessed1 my husband was born with 3 toes on his right foot and that leg was shorter than the other one he had surgery to correct the difference...I read that you are considered about your sons children inheriting this abnormality. Just wanted to share with you that I have two children and neither one of them inherited this and I also have 4 grandchildren that do not have this either. So I believe it is not inherited trait... hope this put your mind at ease. BTY I was 16 when I met my husband and his 3 toe foot never bothered me...we will be married 40 years tomorrow! Your son can live a very normal and full life with this. Never consider it a disability and he will be fine!

Hi @CatflapFlapjack I myself was born with he same condition. Although Ive never gotten myself diagnosed, your description is very identical to my situation. Im happy to chat if you have any questions. I have been dealing with it the past 24 years. Feel free to email me @hovhann123@gmail.com

Hi @hovhansteph thank you for the offer. I contacted another user through this thread whose son has also been diagnosed with Fibular Hemimelia like my nephew and is exactly the same age (and we're both in the UK!). She's been incredibly supportive and has given us advice about operations, etc. too. I will pass on your message to my sister :)
