Baby with mucus?

I had my baby at 37 weeks via c section due to her being small (only weighed 4lb 4oz) and was warned about the mucus. Once she was born she had no major issues with mucus apart from occasionally sicking up milk, which very gooey in the first few days.

We had no other signs of her being mucusy and she’s now 2 weeks old, but the past couple of days she’s had an awful blocked nose and makes awful sounds in the night as you can tell it’s really bothering her. She’s also straining a lot and I can’t sleep as I’m so worried she won’t be able to breath Sad she seems to be absolutely fine during the day though, even when she’s asleep in the same bed.

We have tried the saline sprays and sucking out the snot, which worked the first time but now there doesn’t seem to be any snot to suck. Her nose doesn’t seem as blocked but last night she was really unsettled. She is breastfed and feeding okay, although I pumped in the night as I wanted to actually see her taking in the milk.

Would this be worth a phone call to the GP or is this pretty normal? Mainly worried as she’s been fine till now and I know you can’t be too cautious with their breathing.

Sorry if that doesn’t make much sense, I am TIRED

I would ask GP or health visitor for advice, my baby had mucus that was coming up with vomit as you describe but if I remember correctly it cleared up after a few days, maybe she has picked up a cold as there are lots going around at the moment. Feeding well is a good sign but always better to check and put mind at rest.

We have the midwife coming this aft to weigh her so I’ll mention it to her and see what she says. She’s been absolutely fine all day, not even a blocked nose, so unsure why it keeps getting worse at night Sad

If I don’t feel better I’ll phone the GP and hope they will ask to see her and listen to her chest etc

Hi there, I'm just wondering if you got any answers about this? My daughter is 5 weeks old and suffering badly with mucus. She chokes a lot of she brings it up and seems to suffer at night worse with it. We keep getting told she'll get rid of it but she's had it for about 3 weeks now! Hope you have managed to get some relief for your baby!

Hello my baby had quite bad congestion for around 3 weeks. He’s 7 weeks now and it’s has just started to not bother him. We bought a humidifier which I’m not convinced worked but you try these things. I was the same as you, worrying that he couldn’t breath. The only thing that would help was keeping him upright and positioning his head to the side when sleeping. Oh and the saline drops helped him too

Allergies (particularly CMPA) can cause babies to be congested, have mucus in their nappies, and have reflux which is worse at night, it can make them cough and splutter (not just vomit) and be generally unsettled.

Might not be that but mentioning it just as something to consider.
