Non 'nursing' nursing clothes!?

Hi ladies,

I have baby number two incoming in a few weeks and I need a few more bits for my hospital bag and the weeks after.

Last time I battled at breastfeeding for three months and never quite got there (only ended up being able to express about a bottle a day)

I'd like to try again but I'm really very reluctant to fork out on nursing bras and clothes when I'm likely to struggle again and have promised myself that I'll give it only a couple of weeks before switching to formula rather then the stress and tears for months I did last time.

Has anyone got any non-nursing clothes that are easy to feed/try to feed in recommendations please? I'd like to be able to wear them afterwards so none of the traditional clips or weird flaps that obviously nursing clothes come with please!

I'm thinking maybe some button down jersey vest tops or some deep popper Henley type tops? All comfy stuff, no need for anything fancy!

A lot of the vests I've found with buttons are only for decoration and you can't actually undo 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Thank you in advanced... I've spent too long searching online and would really appreciate some recommendations from mumas who have been there!

Any top/bottom separates you like and wear a vest top underneath. Liftt top up, pull vest down. You can feed exposing very little.

Have a follow of Can i breastfeed in it on Facebook - they have loads of normal suggestions!

Layers are your friend. One layer goes up the other goes down. Although I used to wear a lot of V necks and just hoik a boob out. A big collection of pashmina type scarves for modesty. Pashminas are also handy as emergency blanket/ sunshade for the car and the buggy.

I got nursing bras
But stretchy vests to go under clothes but over bra so vest comes down under bra abs you’re not flashing tummy and you can wear your own clothes. I couldn’t really wear anything fitted but probably wouldn’t have anyway.

Shirts, tops with zips or buttons etc and vests with a loose top over are probably your best bet.

Sainsbury's (Tu) has a breastfeeding friendly section in their clothes bit online which is mostly shirts and things.

Can you get into the shops anywhere? I think it's probably easier to look round H&M, Primark or wherever and pick up anything with proper zips or buttons in real life.

Finally you might find some really cheap 'proper' nursing tops on Vinted or eBay - if you're probably only wearing for a few months you could buy second hand and pass or sell ok after. I bought a JoJo Maman bundle from eBay which was about 3 tops for £8 or so

I had plenty of nursing clothes but possibly my main recommendation is vest tops with a layer (shirt, cardigan, zip up hoody etc) over the top. You pull the vest top up, and the top layer to the side, meaning very little of anything is exposed.
Nursing bras are infinitely easier to feed with than normal bras so perhaps buy some second hand on ebay maybe? Or just a two pack from H&M or Primark?

I'm not wearing any clothes specifically designed for nursing? Just wear t-shirts or vest tops etc that are loose enough to pull them up easily? I would purchase some nursing bras though as that makes it all much easier - you can buy some very cheaply online or at supermarkets, and there is no reason you can't use them longer term even when not breastfeeding.

Primark v neck night wear. Get a size or two up. Easy to pull down to feed x

Zanina · 25/09/2021 08:45

And echo the vest top and tshirt over. Just pull up and pull down. Buttoned shirts/ shirt dress (asos/ shein) and just vest tops. Breastfeeding clothes are over rated

Agree with everyone else and also I would get a nursing bra - you're more likely to get blocked ducts in a proper bra (plus you'll likely ruin it with all the leaking milk in early days)

Primark and Asda both do very cheaper, perfectly good nursing bras.

Button down shirts / dresses, wrap front tops / dresses, front fastening bras, off shoulder tops.
