Burping and gas/colic issues

Hi, I'm a FTM to a 2 week old. She's exclusively breastfed and feeding very well (approx every 2 to 3 hours) and plenty of wet/dirty nappies. From the beginning I've never really been successful at burping her after each feed, I maybe get a small burp after every other feed at most. I've heard conflicting things from different midwives regarding burping breastfed babies, some say you don't need to as much as a bottle fed baby, others say the opposite.

Anyway my poor baby has developed terrible gas/colic in the last few days. She goes bright red, screws up her face and body and screams until she eventually farts or poos. I'm guessing if I could burp her better I could avoid this. I've tried all the different burping positions (over shoulder, on her front across my lap, sitting up etc).

I know this is probably common but any tips at all?

@Luckyelephant1 I'm not too sure on advice as I'm having same issue!! My DD ends up being sick quite a lot snd I think it's wind! I used to use infacol for previous DD but she was bottle fed x

You don't need to burp a baby, many cultures don't. I would look up cmpa though just so you are aware of the symtpoms if things don't get better.

I had the same, was told not to bother burping my breastfed baby but he had colic and would scream ALL day! He would go red, get angry, pull his knees up etc and settle as soon as he'd burped/farted. He's 6 weeks old and definitely screams less and seems much happier so it does get easier. We've been using infacol before every feed which helps the air bubbles bind together to make it easier to clear and then just hold him over our shoulder rubbing his back until he burps (sometimes gently patting but I've read this can be counter productive as it can break air bubbles up making them smaller and harder to clear). I generally keep him upright for 5-10 minutes after a feed to reduce the reflux/vomiting too. He doesn't always burp, sometimes I end up putting him down and when he screams I pick him up he'll often burp then x

Hi all I'm jumping on as my 1 week old does the same. Screws up face, cries a lot, farts non stop only calms down when he's farted or pooped poor baby. Started him on colic drops today too! I've mixed it in with his milk (expressed in bottle as BF is difficult atm due to tongue tie) so hopefully it'll help! I'm worried about keep giving him it but it does say I can do 6 doses a day, so we shall see! Might do a syringe every other feed.
Feel for him because he lies down constantly making noises, screwing up his face he looks so uncomfortable poor boy x

Infacol
Colic hold
Feeding as upright as possible
Upright after feeds 5-10 mins
Pace feeding ( mine guzzles)

I’m mix feeding and my baby is only a touch less gassy after breast milk. Still needs help to get rid of it. Good luck

I would agree with trying to feed as upright as possible during and after feeding. Each of my babies responded differently to different burping techniques. What I found helpful for my current dd was sitting her on my lap facing the same way as me so back to my stomach, supporting her head and then I’d rock back and forth, which would also gently rock her. It’s a really frustrating and difficult situation - I hope she starts to improve soon x
