Driving after c section?

I'm 5 weeks post c section and can't get an appointment with my doctors surgery until I am 8 weeks post c section.

I was advised when leaving hospital that I should speak to my doctor at the 6 week check about driving again.
However the receptionist has also said there is no physical examination for me at the post natal check.

When did people start driving again after a c section? Has anyone had issues with their insurance with this?
I'm in Scotland if that makes any difference.

Could you have a telephone appointment and they should be able to assess from that whether you are OK physically to drive. Would you be able to do an emergency stop and drive comfortably without pain distracting you?

Look at your car insurance company for what they require. Mine didn't need anything from a doctor, just wanted me to be sure I could emergency stop with no hesitation.

They were happy for me to drive at 3 weeks post section, so long as I was pain free as above.

I started driving after a week. The doctor has said it was my own judgment call and the insurance company were fine with that. I could have driven earlier but felt they might think I was taking the mickey, so didn't ask until 7 days had passed.

It was an automatic car though, which makes quite a difference.

I drove after 4 weeks.

Yeah I think I'd be able to do that now. The receptionist said any telephone appointments with the doctor would be into that same week!!

I was told by a doctor today (4 weeks post c section) that if I felt I could perform an emergency stop I am fine to drive

I was back to driving 2 weeks after mine. I went out late in the evening and drove down the road and back with a couple of emergency stops. Called my GP the next day, he said as long as I feel ok to drive it’s fine with him. Called my insurance company, and they told me that as long as my GP said it was ok, it was ok with them.

I’d honestly thought I wasn’t allowed to drive until 6 weeks had passed but I went stir crazy (I live rurally) and one of my DTs hadn’t stopped crying all day and I left as soon as dh got home from work as I needed out.

I'm one month PP
My midwife told me to call insurer about when I can drive
Then it's apparently about when you can do an emergency stop but not sure how I'm supposed to know that unless I drive

I feel like I could drive though

eurochick · 19/07/2021 22:07

My insurance company wanted a dr to ok me to drive but others don't. You need to call your insurer.

I checked I could move the car on the driveway and lift both feet for emergency stop on day 6 but it took me to day 11 to get a GP appointment, so I couldn't drive until then. My baby was in nicu and my husband didn't drive so I was eager to get driving again. Plus, after my section driving myself was a lot more comfortable than being bounced around in the back of a mini cab with shit suspension.

10 days pp with insurers permission

I left it till 6 weeks as advised by the midwives before I was discharged from hospital. I asked my doctor and was told it was up to my insurance company. So I rang them and they said that 6 weeks is only guidance and that as long as I could do an emergency stop safely then I could drive when I felt ready, as long as my doctor was happy with it too.

TheCraicDealer · 19/07/2021 22:17

I phoned my insurer at 4 weeks pp (felt more than able to drive after 2 weeks to be honest) to ask if I could drive ok, and the call handler had no idea why I was calling. He was just like, "yeah crack on, congrats on the baby".

BastardMonkfish · 27/07/2021 19:23

I'm on day 11 and I'll be driving in the next few days. It's driving me nuts not being able to take my older DS out to the park or anywhere else in summer holidays.

Opalfeet · 31/07/2021 16:52

2 weeks, insurance said they just needed Dr to say I could do emergency stop. I rang Dr he said can you? I said yes and that was that.

stretchypants · 02/08/2021 21:47

I was at the other end of the spectrum and it took me 8 weeks until I was able to drive again, I had an infection though which delayed the healing process. I would go with how you feel.
