Potential milk allergy?? Help!!!

Hi, FTM here& looking for advice!

Since birth my little boy was vomiting milk up whenever we gave it to him, he was on Cow&Gate. We got advised to try him on another brand of milk so tried SMA, he absolutely hated it so went back to Cow&Gate. After a few days his vomiting started to get more and more, he developed a rash on his face which the midwife said was just milk spots& they would go.

He's now 5 weeks old and the rash is still there on his face but has gone onto his chest& stomach. It flares up more every time he has a bottle, I made an appointment with the doctors who once again said it would be a milk rash and there's nothing to worry about. He's been crying since 11pm, he keeps spitting his milk out and won't settle at all, this is the 4th night running he's been like this and I have no idea what to do?! I've tried winding him for ages in loads of different positions but that's not changing anything. He constantly goes from being constipated to diarrhoea and is always straining/having funny tummy noises.

I'm just wondering if anyone suspects it could be a cows milk allergy as someone had mentioned that before? Or has anyone experienced similar and found that something worked? Willing to try anything as I'm desperate for some sleep & for him to feel better!!

It does sound like a cows milk allergy. You will unfortunately, need to go back to the GP as all the cows milk free formulas are prescription only. It sounds like you are going to have to be pushy though as the GP sounds a bit clueless. It might work if you ask for a 2 week trial of the special formula rather than it being a permanent switch. Also its useful to know that cows milk allergies often go alongside soya allergies, so if you are cutting one out, it makes sense to cut both out to get everything settled down, then you can do a trial of soya to see if it causes a reaction

@SeaToSki I was under a consultant when I was pregnant as I'm allergic to dairy myself, they wanted to keep an eye on me and told me that it could potentially be passed on to baby when he was born due to me not consuming it whilst being pregnant. (This is why they tell you to eat nuts as they've found it significantly reduces the baby's chance of being allergic) I've pushed and pushed for him to be checked out and thought it was a cows milk allergy from day one but got looked at like I was stupid!! Thank you so much for replying though, and for telling me about the soya as I had no idea :) x

If you dont think the GP will prescribe it, can you afford a private appointment with a pediatrician? It would probably cost 150 pounds ish. If they agree and prescribe a trial, you can switch back to the NHS and the GP will have to follow the course of treatment the pediatrician says.
Or you can try and source some yourself, you can buy it in chemists in Europe and the USA. Search for hypoallergenic formula. Just be careful that it is hydrolysed formula. There are a couple of options on Amazon. Nutramigen is one, Alimentum is another. They are expensive, but if you try it for 3 weeks and notice a difference, you have evidence to take to your GP

Oh and you dont need a GP referral to book a private appointment. Just google clinics close to you, check if one of the doctors specialises in digestive/allergies in children (which would be the absolute best option) and then call the clinic yourself and say you are self referring

@SeaToSki I didn't think about going private! I'll have a look on google for clinics near me that I can go to then give them a ring like you say. Thank you so much for your help! I tried with the GP again today who said it was Colic. I've got drops to put in his milk for him to see if they work, going to give them a week and if they haven't worked at all then I'll definitely be going private. Thank you for all of that info :)
