Hi, just that..hospital offering a BCG vaccination after birth for the baby, before you leave hospital...did you do it straight away or waited a few months and had it done when baby is older?

Straight away. I'm not aware of any evidence suggesting you should wait?

It's obviously a good idea generally if you're in an at-risk group, but there's some suggestion that it might protect against Covid so it seems a no-brainer right now.

I had it the day after my birth and so did my dd. Ds had it when he was older. It's such a long horrible injection, it's better to have no memory of it!! Plus it heals better!

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/07/2020 16:39

My DD had to have it but we were told not to have it till she was 6 months. I got an appointment in a letter and it was done at the hospital I gave birth in at a special clinic. Would have been much more convenient if the GP surgery offered it but I don’t think most babies are offered it.

Where I was born, not the U.K., babies had it before leaving the hospital but that was some time ago.

What are you thinking?

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/07/2020 16:40

DD was born last year in the U.K., should have said. I was really worried about it but she barely noticed, no after effects either that day or in the weeks after and no blister or scar.

Bmidreams · 15/07/2020 16:40

My dd is only 6.

irnbrubear · 15/07/2020 16:45

My DD had it done when she was a couple of weeks old. She would have had it done at birth except that it's not given routinely in the borough where she was born, but is recommended in the borough where we live. In our borough, it's only funded until the baby is 28 days old. If we wanted it done after that, we would have needed to get it done privately. It might be different where you live though. I'm not aware of any evidence suggesting advantages in waiting a few months, but to be honest didn't research it that closely.

My dd who is 5 had it done at 4m, they were not doing it straight after birth at that time, due with the second one in next few days and got a leaflet that they now do it after birth..things obviously changed in last 5y..thank you all got your responses.

I would honestly do it asap. There is some very interesting research which shows that over millions of doses, children who are vaccinated suffer lower death rates from other illnesses too. The mechanism isn't fully understood, but it might be to do with T cell immunity being boosted... which is interesting when you look at the Covid research.

All 3 of my children had it the day after birth as the hospital is i an area near the airport which is a bit of a hotspot.

ChaBishkoot · 15/07/2020 17:02

At birth.

happymummy12345 · 15/07/2020 17:15

I had mine at my 6 week check. My son had his at his 6 week check. That was when it was given (he was born 5 years ago).

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/07/2020 01:13

DS got his when he was a couple of days old. It was recommended as we’re Indian.
