Best ways to get baby to sleep in cot

Hi, desperate for tips on how to get a baby to sleep in the bedside crib!! She only sleeps when she’s in bed with me and then as soon as I put her in the crib she’ll wake up straight away. I’ve ordered a sleepyhead but read that you can’t use them when they are asleep at night😕

I’d do what works and have her in with you. Have a next to me type cot and keep trying her in it when you take her to bed but out of my 3 dc 1 slept in the cot, 1 didn’t bloody sleep anywhere until 2, 1 starts the night in the cot then comes in with me, sometimes I can get dc3 back in the cot after waking for a feed sometimes not.

I have an 11 month old and I've only just managed to get her to sleep in her cot within the past week or so (and even then it's only for a few hours before she's back in with me)! I didn't want to cosleep but it was the only way in the end that any of us got sleep. She wouldn't sleep at all in the Next2Me. I'd agree with @Madratlady and do what works for you both. Whatever helps you get some sleep!

I used a sleepyhead from birth for day and night and it was fab x

Sometimes I found going from my chest/bed which was warm into a cooler cot/crib woke my DS up. So I starting warming it with a hot water bottle just to take the chill off the sheets

Thank you everyone, i tried them last night and just ended up with her in bed with me again. She really wont sleep in her next to me so I’ll just have to wait for her sleepyhead to come and see if that works

How old is baby? I would definitely try swaddling, I found the velcro swaddles best (on Amazon for example) and do it tightly with arms at sides.

She’s 2 weeks old today and I’ve tried swaddling I’ve got 2 of them which again she doesn’t like😕😕

Is she quite small, I found swaddling easier when mine was a month or so I think. I had to move my first so slowly into the carry cot, inch by inch and if they woke I had to start all over again. Oh the joys!!

Willow4987 · 03/12/2019 22:49

Ah she’s still so small! I think a lot of babies just really need their mums at that age....she’s so used to being inside of you it’s got to be strange for her to be away from you

Don’t worry...eventually she’ll settle easier in her own cot

Lunafortheloveogod · 03/12/2019 23:02

At 2 weeks old they don’t like much that’s not directly on you, don’t worry it won’t last forever.
One thing that partially worked for ds in the early days was popping a (not boiling) hot water bottle in his spot while I was feeding/getting him to sleep and moving it just before he went in so he wasn’t laying onto a suddenly cold sheet. I’d pop it back in when I picked him up to feed/change and repeat the process... who knows if it was a placebo effect but it seemed to help.

He also hated the swaddle until he was bigger, the only way to swaddle him at that age was with a flat swaddling blanket, the posh wraps didn’t have enough hold over him.

Thank you everyone, going to try them tonight see what works!!

We're a week or so ahead of you. We discovered dummies last week to stop him raging at nappy changes, and then tried it overnight too. Doesn't completely solve the issue but he definitely settles better in the bedside crib with one.

My baby was like this for the first few weeks, she is now 6wks & sleeps in her cot fine now.
Put your baby in the cot and nap times through the day too it will help them get used to it faster. Dummies are a good way as the last mum said.
