When you have your first child, how to make YOU feel good?

Hello everyone,

My younger brother's girlfriend is expecting their first child, a boy. I was told by my mother that when you have a child, it is common for everyone's attention to shift onto the baby, making the girl feel neglected and ignored.

I would like to stop this from happening and I'm trying to put together a gift box for HER.

Could you please help me with some suggestions? Maybe fashion items, medical supplies, pillows, health & beauty stuff like stretch mark oil, massage therapy sessions, etc. What are some things you feel would've helped you to receive at that moment in time?

Thank you

Hi.

Thats a lovely idea.

I think a small selection of her favourite things is a nice gesture.

spritz for your bits is a little pricey but really helped with my healing and pain relief from stitches. I got given lots of pamper bits before baby was born but I haven't had the energy to use any of them. all I wanted was my pjs so I'd also suggest nice fluffy socks, some chocolate for an energy boost and a nice soft drink would have gone down well. I've been given lots of prosecco but with breastfeeding and pain relief I still haven't had a glass

A former boss sent me some lovely flowers which was lovely. I'd probably like being given a nice candle and chocolate too.

I was given fluffy socks... slipped on the stairs with 3 day old DD in my arms (she was fine, I slowed my descent with the power of my little toe in the bannister... which I broke). Fluffy socks with grippy bits only!! Grin

Hobnobs, nice handcream, nice shower gel (as I had water only baths so DD could come in with me), more hobnobs.

I would have liked a voucher for a high street coffee place as I spent so much time in them when I was on mat leave! A simple treat 😊

The best gift I received was a friend who drove 40 miles to my house, bringing some lovely food with her, made us both lunch, held the baby while I ate then washed up. She also stayed for a couple of hours and just kept me company and talked to me.

Also a neighbour who made me a cheese sandwich on a couple of occasions.

Sounds daft to anyone who hasn’t had a baby, but meant the world to me at the time.

I love this post, well done for being so thoughtful! Practical help is what I would want, freezer meals, clean the bathroom, run the vacuum round but most importantly, ask how she is doing regularly, and tell her she's doing a great job xx
