Vomiting newborn - when to worry/what's normal

Hi everyone,

(Probably) paranoid FTM here - was just wondering what guidance everyone here could give me on when to worry about vomiting?

DD is now 17 days old and breast fed. It's only happened a few times but she has been sick, what I would consider more than spit up. It's usually 15 mins or so after a feed, with other little symptoms being coughing a few times and she does get hiccups quite often. She doesn't seem bothered after being sick as well. My DH seems to think I'm being neurotic (entirely possible) and it's totally normal for her to throw up occasionally (his words "why do you think everyone bought us muslins as gifts?!").

I've been a bit tearful and worried since she was born, not all the time but I get occasional bouts of "I have literally NO idea what I'm doing" panics, so he might be right, but I'd just love to hear what was normal for everyone's little ones at this stage - the friends/family I've asked so far can't seem to remember!

Thanks everyone, hope I don't sound too ridiculous :(

My kids are 7 and 11. I still don’t think I know what I’m doing!

Personally I don’t think this sounds like anything to worry about. If she’s not doing it after every feed, isn’t feverish or in pain and is having wet and dirty nappies id say it’s normal.

Ds was rarely sick other than just possessing. Dd was like the kid out of the exorcist after most feeds - both normal and healthy.

One of mine was never a vomiter and still isn't, the other regularly projectiles. As long as they are gaining weight then more is staying in than coming out.

Thank you both, that's reassuring. Happened again this morning about 15 minutes after a feed - it definitely seemed like vomit as opposed to spit up but it seemed more watery than anything else?? She didn't cry when it happened but I still find it difficult to see Sad

DS was a fairly sicky baby, and I took him to the GP. As long as he continued gain weight normally they were not interested, extremely patronising too. My HV was lovely. She explained that there is a BIG difference between ‘posset’ and vomit. Posseting is completely normal. Vomiting is mugfuls of projectile milk and an upset baby. If it’s not bothering her at the time and she’s gaining weight, I honestly wouldn’t worry.

It’s normal to not quite be your normal self so soon after birth, but sometimes that can mask something more. I didn’t realise how anxious I was until months later. I had PND and eventually got help. Feel brilliant now and have fully recovered at a year postpartum.

My 1st was constantly sick like that and I was so worried he wasn't getting enough (very small and still is at 3) but he was fine.

DD (now 8m) only did it a handful of times. But once she had bronchiolitis and was actually vomiting after every feed and it was totally different, coughing and spluttering and crying, it was really horrible to see her go through it. The fountain of milk that just seems to jump out of them (and cover everything in sight) while they happily get on with things is annoying but not anything to worry about (although you probably still will)
