EBF..when to start formula at night? Was this easy?

My baby is now 11 weeks old. He is exclusively breast fed and despite a couple of weeks of sleeping through for 5-6hrs were now back to every 3-4hrs. He's growing well, but I don't think he has a full tummy at night.

When you added in formula at night x 1, was it easy? How long did it take for LO to get used to? Did your breasts get used to it?

Night feeds are important for keeping up your supply. There’s a growth spurt at around 12 weeks and babies tend to cluster feed around then. It usually passes within a few weeks.

Don't introduce formula at night. Your baby needs these extra night feeds to boost your supply. I promise it passes.

If you feel like you must introduce a formula feed then don't make it a night feed. Formula is hard to digest and can cause babies to sleep too long and deeply. This is why it increases the SIDs risk.

I wouldn't introduce formula. I ebf & my baby sleeps through. Friends of mine have baby's that are on formula & don't sleep through. Keep doing what you're doing. If baby is having wet & dirty nappy's, and generally content then they are getting enough.

Really?!! Never heard of this Hmm

He is full he just has a small stomach so needs feeding often. That's a perfectly normal gap.

SpaceDinosaur · 21/01/2018 13:05

It's a known side affect of formula squirrell breastmilk substitutes triples or quadruples a baby's risk of SIDS link to just one publication on this.

SpaceDinosaur · 21/01/2018 13:06

Across the board, SIDS is a relatively low risk for all babies but if we're all putting our babies to sleep on their backs because that lowers the risk then why would you want to do something that increases the risk?

Introducing formula will not make baby sleep any better. Incidentally, nor will weaning onto solids. 3-4 hours is good!

Oly5 · 21/01/2018 13:28

Waking every 3-4 hours is good at this age! You are being too hard on him
This time is short, just keep breastfeeding him

PotteringAlong · 21/01/2018 13:31

My 11 month old doesn’t go 3-4 hours without waking up at night. That’s a really decent chunk of sleep. Introduce formula of you want bit don’t expect it to make him a magic sleeper.

I tried for weeks to do this thinking it was going to make everything better with sleep. I stressed myself (and her) out so much trying to make her hungry enough to take a full bottle. Or even some of a bottle. Then i realised that the 2 nights she had slept 8 hours straight were when I hadnt botheree with the bottle.
Apparently night time breast milk has sleep inducing hormones in it?
I still try and give one bottle a day if I can but its in the afternoon some time.
It may work for you, its worked well for a friend of mine
