I also bumped DSs head more than once and he did pull a silent scream face before howling for a few seconds. I think it's more the shock than the pain as totally fine straight after! So you would have known about it if you'd properly donked his head.

holls2000 · 14/01/2015 19:24

thank you all. he screamed when daddy got home but 9oz of milk, a bath and a story later he is back to normal. do you think maybe we are too hard on ourselves?... gave calpol tonight as lots of chewing fingers so wondered if teething sore. also had jabs yesterday so probs still a bit Sad from them!!!

weaning. can I do a bit of both? purees but some investigative stuff too?? my hv said as he has had a quite sensitive tum not to wean before 6 months which is fine. he is starting to show interest in food which is good.

cookielove · 14/01/2015 19:32

I've made some apple puree which is now in ice cube trays in the freezer!

Just got to get up the nerve to start trying new stuff! Eeek!

holls2000 · 14/01/2015 20:10

cookie you are amazing!

KitKat1985 · 14/01/2015 20:14

Holls I'm sure your DS would let you know if you hurt him. Don't beat yourself up about it. About a month ago I cut Jessica's fingernails and she moved one of her fingers at the last minute and I caught the end of her fingers instead. It bled and bruised and she screamed afterwards for ages. I felt like the worst mummy ever. Sad

Oh and holls I'm also going to try a bit of both re: puree and baby led weaning.

Nazly · 14/01/2015 21:19

I only cut nails when D is fully asleep- impossible otherwise; he does not allow me to take his hand and keep it, does not stop moving and is getting stronger as well; a very difficult thing this cutting nail...

I am leading such a rock and roll life right now; good news of my day is that we had 3 poos one after another with no intervention from me!!

Braved a journey to ikea with a friend; bought the highchair with attached table plus the comfort cover plus four wearing bibs all for 26 quids; all in 45min. Happy with how cheap and efficient it was.

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2015 21:23

Ikea with baby in 45mins!!! Bloody hell you deserve a medal!

I need to go. I am avoiding it.

holls2000 · 14/01/2015 21:25

That is amazing. I once told dh we would nip into ikea. we spent an hour and a half sat in the carpark trying to get out.....

cookielove · 14/01/2015 21:29

holls why am I amazing?

Elijah seems to got some sort if routine back today and it's been a long time coming!

CumbrianExile · 14/01/2015 21:31

Lol, another one putting of a much needed Ikea trip. I always end up wandering around wishing I could afford all the pretty things, and always always buy candles...I don't need anymore candles Grin

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2015 21:49

The picture frame section is my downfall...

I DO need more frames. However I haven't got DH to put the last lot up (he wouldn't let me do it, as he'll forever complain about it being crooked).

Nazly · 14/01/2015 21:50

We went straight to children section which is close to entrance, put both babies in high chair, both were happy and comfy; tried with and without covers; immediately next to them were bibs, took them, took photo from isle numbers, asked first available staff member what is the shortcut to checkout; shortcut made it a lot faster; didn't look at anything else as we were chatting; collected stuff from isles, waited just 5min in queue to pay; all done. Then went to a local cafe to rest and chat some more :)

Weekdays are a lot better than weekends; I recommend going weekdays with a friend or family member if possible...

Both babies were good too; ds started to nag but was swiftly moved from pushchair to sling and slept the rest of the time we were in ikea.

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2015 22:09

We went between Christmas and New Year to buy a cot. TBH, its not so much whether its a weekend or weekday that's the issue. Its just walking round the entire bloody place that is.

The one thing I do love about Ikea is going to the warehouse round the corner and watching everyone trying to get their purchase into their car.... whilst smugly sitting in DH's normally very uncool estate.

holls2000 · 14/01/2015 22:30

cookie cos you have made and frozen purees!! 7 weeks to go here oh my word that's no time at all really....

Nazly · 14/01/2015 22:57

Red all of them have shortcuts- if interested , just ask a staff member

Zanashar · 14/01/2015 23:26

DD did her first rolly overs today!!!!!! @ Baby Sensory of all places - then managed a few more just before bedtime. Jabs tomorrow @ 9:30 and I'm still nowhere near going to bed yet (night owl here)

We attempted our local Ikea on Saturday and gave up after driving around the entire car park and not finding one single parking spot!!! Never again on a weekend with DD and DH.

I've not a clue as to how or when to start with weaning here - had a session with HV but walked away quite confused - am finding the discussions/experiences shared on here far more useful, so thank you all!

We have a post-jabs lunch date tomorrow too with an old school friend who has a DS just 8 days older than Z, which is always nice as we get to compare our experiences pretty much in real time

CumbrianExile · 15/01/2015 07:38

A had the worst night last night since he was about 3 weeks old. Woke up almost every hour, but didn't seem to want anything other than cuddles. I hope he is back to normal tomorrow as I am soo tired now!

RedToothBrush · 15/01/2015 08:47

Nazly, I know all the shortcuts... or I did when to my horror last time I went in, two weeks ago they had removed them!

Glad to know someone else had EXACTLY the same problem as us. Two nights in a row. DS just would not settle in his co-sleeper. But the second I picked him up and put him on me he would fall asleep. In the end I gave in last night and put him in the bed with us, so he was snuggled next to me as safely as possible. I manage to get some rest like that at least. Not ideal, but I always figure some sleep is better than no sleep.

He's refusing to eat this morning too though. Pretty sure its all down to a cold and him not feeling terribly well.

I'm pissed off. We have had a couple of really good feeding days, where we think he's put on weight, and now this.

I'm going to have a shower and stick him in the room with me shortly, in the hope it helps.

Morning!

Those with unsettled babies, have you thought about an extra blanket?
Or pin them down in the cot with an across-ways sheet?

That sounds worse than it is - it's like swaddling only for older babies. If they are tucked in really tightly (hence using the blanket sideways, more material to tuck in) it gives a sense of security and also calms flaying legs/arms. It also adds an extra layer of warmth, which is helpful in winter.

Re IKEA. I live about 2 minutes from an IKEA store so it dominates life in our little village - wet days, bank holidays, weekends, December/January in general - all mean traffic is a nightmare around IKEA and it's really hard for us to get from our house to the nearest A Road to go anywhere.

WE often go for breakfast at IKEA, the café is good (bottomless drinks are always a good thing!). IKEA café used to be home to our local breastfeeding support group. If I'm going shopping at IKEA, always 8pm for me. Store closes at 9pm and it's always the quietest time.

KitKat1985 · 15/01/2015 09:03

Jessica had me up quite a bit last night as well. I think she's having another growth spurt as all she wants is food! Plus all her clothes are suddenly looking too small on her.

I've never been to Ikea in my life. There's not one near us and so I've never bothered. Am I missing out?

Congrats Zanashar on your DDs first roll! x

RedToothBrush · 15/01/2015 09:31

It was 17C in here last night so not terribly cold. (Thermometer in his cot). We've been keeping the house a constant temperature since he was born with the lowest its dropped to being 15C.

I know he likes it warmer than recommended so already has two blankets folded, a sleeping bag and a fleecy sleep suit and vest at night. I'm not sure I'm keen on another layer if I'm honest. But if he likes sleeping on me, maybe the heat is the answer... I think if he was able to roll I might be more inclined to try it, but I think I'm a little nervous. When I put him in the bed with me, I removed his blankets and put him (in his sleeping bag) on top of my blankets. So he wasn't in the bed per say. I do think it was a comfort issue rather than anything. He was refusing his bottle last night but breastfeed instead and was dreadfully clingy in the evening too with both me and DH.

A tight sheet definitely won't work with DS. He hates being restricted and throws a fit if you try. We've had to abandon the pram part of his travel system for this reason as although he will just about still fit in it, he isn't happy.

Ikea sucks the life out of you Kit Kat. If there isn't one near you, then you'll probably find much nicer stuff in shops near you as they don't have to compete. They are like blackholes, that suck in character from homes so they all look the same inside. It never fails to amaze me how far people will travel to them though. Our local one was one of the first, and people would journey 200miles to it. Its not that amazing. Not even close.

Ah see Red I love ikea!! I like that the furniture is quite minimalist and has clean lines. I also live in a teeny house and they have brilliant storage solutions. I'm not bothered about character or uniqueness in my home so I guess that makes a difference. Our bedroom furniture needs replacing and I've chosen everything I want from ikea. We can't afford it just yet but I'm excited already :)

cookielove · 15/01/2015 09:43

Ahhh thanks holls I now have to get up the nerve to start feeding him.

I love ikea!

RedToothBrush · 15/01/2015 10:53

Honey, my problem with Ikea is not that I dislike the clean lines and storage solutions. Quite the opposite. I am very much a fan of Scandinavian design. Its more that a) EVERYONE has a Billy bookcase b) there are better Scandinavian designers its just they aren't in the UK or are hideously expensive.

There was a Danish company that came over for a couple of years; I think they were called Ilva or something. They were slightly more expensive but still quite competitive and there design was just 'better' as was the quality. Only problem was they took out a ridiculous loan to launch in the UK at just the wrong time and went bump.

I've something of a love affair with Scandinavia. I LOVE shopping there. Well I would if I could afford it and afford to ship stuff back here!

For your amusement:
1 in 5 British Babies are conceived in an Ikea Bed.
Its upholstered furniture is usually named after Swedish place names.
Its chairs after Swedish men's names.
Its garden furniture after Swedish islands.
Its curtains after Swedish women's names.

Quite why women are curtains and men are chairs is a subject for feminists I'm sure.

Another Ikea fan here. Red you're right that it's totally soul-less but amazing value for money for basics and clever storage. Our Ikea stuff is like a backdrop for the interesting stuff in our house. Oh and we have Ikea kitchen units because they actually because they ARE incredible value for money.

Ds isn't doing so great with sleep this week. She's 18 weeks and seems to have doubled in size this week so definitely a growth spurt!
