We've been at it for a good hour, on top of a good 30 minute feed. This is typical for us at night but not in the daytime!

SpottyTeacakes · 31/12/2012 03:41

I've just fed and changed ds and he is now in his Moses basket, wide awake with his arms in the air kind of snorting Hmm straight to sleep in the day for us too....

HoneyMumandSon · 31/12/2012 03:46

We're awake too. Nothing helpful to add but thought I'd say hi.

Secondsop · 31/12/2012 03:54

Am giving in and resorting to a bottle. It could be that we spaced out the last 2 bottle feeds too much and he didn't have enough to stop him getting hungry at night no matter how much breast milk he had. It's sometimes like he can't get enough breast milk in him quick enough to satisfy him before it's digested.

SpottyTeacakes · 31/12/2012 03:54

Honey & Seconds I've been using the nipple shields thank you Smile definitely helping although ds seems to be more messy with them!

SpottyTeacakes · 31/12/2012 03:55

Seconds it's when ds won't stop feeding that I'd resort to a bottle Grin I hope you can get some sleep after

Secondsop · 31/12/2012 04:00

spotty I'm going to try to get a couple of hours of sleep in the other room with the cat while my husband does this feed - hopefully he won't wake me up in despair TOO quickly. Oh and little Z is messy with the nipple shields - gets milk all over his face.

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 31/12/2012 04:04

They suck to stimulate milk production. My mum and a lot of her friends gave up bf at similar stages to the ones we're finding hard because "their milk dried up" or they "didn't have enough milk" when really they were strenuously discouraged from letting us get on with what babies do best.

My mum bitterly regrets only getting to 6 weeks with me; societal pressure had her cooking dinner for extended family for my dad's birthday and her milk dried up - probably due to this idolisation of Routine.

It is sooo tempting to give up when it's four in the morning and you're knackered! Ds is feeding again now...

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 31/12/2012 04:27

I know, I'm posting one handed too! It sucks, it really does, but its such a small amount of time really.

Please don't let me pressure you, bottles are not the work of the devil, I just wanted to give a bit of encouragement and motivation!

6 weeks old today, where did that go?!

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 31/12/2012 04:36

I think I would be fine if I didn't have dd to look after too! I feel bad for her as I'm too tired to want to do anything with her.

Felix is five weeks today! Have to get him weighed later bit nervous Confused

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 31/12/2012 04:41

She knows you love her. This stage really is only a few months long - we can do this!

Actually you only have to get him weighed if you want to, its not compulsory :o

Morning all. It's busy around here of an evening.

I wish Little c would make her mind up. Swaddling - either it's the work of the devil, or it's absolutely required for a good nights sleep. She's been rubbish when swaddled for the last week; now she's furious if she's not swaddled. Humph - lucky she's so cute and I love her.

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 31/12/2012 05:10

Does anyone else's baby like to nipple-surf instead of taking a proper mouthful?

OP posts:
EggNogMichelle · 31/12/2012 05:19

Trying to weigh up the lesser of two evils, falling asleep from exhaustion as he feeds, or putting him down still hungry and crying whilst I sleep. I refuse to co sleep, and I can sleep through his crying very easily, it's very tough! Pretty sure he is full of trapped wind, ran out of infacol yesterday, so that would make sense. I think I might cancel new year, I don't care what the date is anymore!

WLmum · 31/12/2012 05:42

Yes pidj, I have to work quite hard to get dd to take a proper mouthful and so access milk rather than human dummy.

Re bottles, nice bf adviceline lady said to view formula like medicine - not something you necessarily want to use all thd time, but helpful to get past certain circumstances. I've felt lots better since taking this approach. Touch wood, the weaning off top ups is going well.

EggNogMichelle · 31/12/2012 05:46

Is nipple surfing when they just have your nipple in their mouth and feels like they are just licking and not sucking?

Went for option 3, cuddling on the sofa and watching boardwalk empire

HoneyMumandSon · 31/12/2012 07:11

I'm probably speaking to soon and will regret saying this, but I think I'm in love with Ewan the sheep.

Secondsop · 31/12/2012 07:14

Morning all. Am back after my husband has done his daddy shift. Re formula, we've been giving top ups for a while now after Z kept losing weight on breast only (and at 4 weeks, he's still a fair way off his birth weight) so i'm fairly unapologetic about them as it's more important to me that he is fed than he is breast fed. I just can't take any chances with whether or not he's getting enough food especially after his initial blood sugar problems. Exclusively breast-feeding just didnt work out for us. He spends many hours a day on the breast though so hopefully I'll be able to keep my supply going for a good while longer - I'm conscious that these long nights of feeding are him trying to keep the supply going but I'm trying to balance that with whether he's getting enough in in the here and now. Hopefully he's still getting some of the immunity benefits even with only some of his feeds being breast milk.

Secondsop · 31/12/2012 07:30

honey we have Ewan too although he needs new batteries, I found out last night. He's also very effective at sending ME to sleep, it turns out.

SpottyTeacakes · 31/12/2012 07:32

I know pidj but last time we went (to check his cord) the scales made out he had lost 6oz in four days! So we need to recheck really. Plus dp is off work so he can entertain dd at clinic then take us for coffee and cake! Luckily my HV is lovely and was convinced it was just a problem with the scales!

The weather is pretty horrendous here though so I would rather stay in bed! Hope everyone managed some sleep last night?

Seconds I think you're doing amazing to carry on with the bf too I don't think I could!

Honey I'm tempted to get one they're quite pricey though?

Secondsop · 31/12/2012 07:34

spotty Ewan ain't cheap but places like Amazon have him including delivery for under £26 and you may find he pays for himself within about 10 minutes.

SpottyTeacakes · 31/12/2012 07:37

Hmm does he stop the fussing? I could use some of his Christmas money!

MaMaPo · 31/12/2012 07:40

Wow, tired this morning. Cannot wait for the day this child sleeps for more than 2 hours at night.
