some here if you look through the list

I am fascinated by this. What is a parent and baby screening? I see there is one for HP and the Goblet of Fire which I have seen and know to be a bit scary in parts. What happens in a P and B screening? Do they cut out the scary bits? Turn down the sound at the noisy parts?

Not being flippant. Genuinely want to know.

TheFish · 12/12/2005 19:48

lights up noise down

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 19:50

Really? Never knew that.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 19:50

Brilliant concept. Wish I had known about it earlier. Is there an age limit on this? Eg, could I go in with my 2, soon to be 3 year old?

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 12/12/2005 19:55

I go to a showing in East Grinstead. This chain of cinemas do them
Picturehouse Cinemas
Just the same as a normal screening (lights down) but aimed at those with under ones (older kids can of course go as well).

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 19:57

Does everyone tolerate the screamy babies or toddlers or are you expected o leave if your child makes too much noise?

feastofsteven · 12/12/2005 19:58

Lonelymum - age limit is unfortunately 12 months (occasionally 18 months if you're lucky!). Allegedly for insurance reasons. But you might be able to get in with your youngest to that Penguin film - my friend went into a normal (none baby) screening of that with her small 21month old, and noone questioned that/

merrycompo · 12/12/2005 19:59

I would have loved to go too but they only seem to have them in London

harpsiheraldangelssing · 12/12/2005 20:00

the Regal in Henley does this too, for babies up to one year old

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 20:01

Yes I am sure my youngest could now sit through a film showing of something appropriate. I can't quite remember how old his sister was when she first went to the cinema but my parents took her so I think that was when they had my childen when I was having ds3 so dd would have been just shy of 3. Well ds3 is now coming up to 3 and watches films on video at home all the way through, so the cinema is a definite possibility. Isn't it great when new avenues start to open up to you?

But I wish I had known about these Parent and Baby screenings before.

TheFish · 12/12/2005 20:01

have em at the odeon in salis

feastofsteven · 12/12/2005 20:03

in Merseyside they have P & B screenings at the Odeon in Bromborough, and FACT in Central Liverpool.

hoXMASchick · 12/12/2005 20:04

it's bliss!

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 12/12/2005 20:05

I have seen older children at the Big Scream screenings - I was under the impression that the age doesn't matter although to join the club and get the cheap tickets your baby has to be under 12 months. Sometimes there are adults there without kids too, although this tends to be when they don't realise it's a Big Scream showing!
Tbh you can barely hear the crying above the noise of the film - it's not a problem, noone has to leave because their baby is crying.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 12/12/2005 20:06

They only show 12A films and under of course.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 20:06

But can anyone answer my question? Do crying babies have to be removed or do all the mums (and dads?) sit there and smile benignly at the babies crying?

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 20:06

Oops crossed posts.

JenJam · 12/12/2005 20:07

i'm hoping/assuming crying babies are to be expected!

OP posts:
TheFish · 12/12/2005 20:08

think you sit there

JenJam · 12/12/2005 20:50

it's not just 12A films ...somes friends of mine went to see constant gardener with their 3 month old...the babies gurgled and screamed through the meaningful silences but they enjoyed it nevertheless

been to picturehouse cinema in stratford, east london almost every week sice dd was born (8 months ago)for their big scream. They usually have at least two films to choose from and are great about adjusting the volume if you feel it's still a bit loud. I had to stop going a few weeks ago as dd shifted her nap times to a bit later and it meant she had a meltdown half way through film but lots of my friends sill go with their under ones. Nobody takes any notice if your baby cries and lots of mums sit breastfeeding with popcorn balanced on baby! Seen more films on maternity leave than I ever mananged to see before. Some odeon cinemas do baby screenings too but you need to check direct with the cinema as they don't seem to list them on the odeon website.

DiamondsAreForChristmastoo · 22/12/2005 19:22

Just noticed this thread- there is a fab Independent cinema called the Rio just by Dalston Kingsland BR which do matinees- they have all the latest releases too. There is also another independent cinema in Whitechapel called the Ocean (I think) which has similar screenings. I haven't been yet but I keep meaning to! The Rio only charges £3 for adults too I think which is another nice bonus!
