Hi there

I am have a HUGE problem breastfeeding and after 3 weeks of trying have decided to give up. I have thrush on my breasts making feeding so so so painful. I have seen a lactation consultant, spoke to la leche, nct and breastfeeding network, gone to a drop in centre and tried every remedy in the book (from nipples shields, cabbage leaves and various nipple creams) yet I still feel a bit down about it!! Is there anything out there I haven't tried that might work??? I feel a bit of a failure at times as I never thought breastfeeding would be so troublesome. I had been so focussed on my pregnancy and birth beforehand that never really thought about it. Any advice? Any remedy or place I haven't tried that might help me continue to breastfeed?

Also, want to know if there are any "groups" locally (in muswell hill or surrounding area) for new mothers to meet w/babies? Looking for ways to get out of the house and enjoy myself (and not just to go off to Tesco's)

If you want to continue (and personally I think it is worth it if possible) first you need to get rid of the trush, which is going to make it a toaly nightmare until it has gone. What treatment have you had for thrush? I think the best and fastest is diflucan for you (the oral treatment) plus Nystatin for the baby's mouth. You can't really even think about things like positioning etc until the thrush has gone as it will hurt however your baby is positioned. You can buy Diflucan over the counter today.

Thanks for that! I am using an antifungal cream right now and oral gel for the little one. In the meantime I am expressing every 3-4 hours to keep my supply going.

I just wish it was not as hard as it has become!

Thanks for you advice!

I really would try the diflucan if I had thrush. Can work miracles and much faster than the cream. Once the horror of the thrush is over, then come back and talk positing etc! Good luck.

Elsbells-alot of us have had this. I had 6 weeks of hell before I went the Duflucan route which worked wonders. The creams didn't shift it at all. Look up spidermamas posts. She has a link to a very useful factsheet from the Breastfeeding Network which you can take to your GP to get him/her to give you the massive anti fungal dose which will shift it.

It's worth a go. Good luck

Thanks everyone for the advice...I will see if my GP will give me Duflucan as I just can't shift it!
It has been so hard and want to keep breastfeeding but am starting to lose the "joy" of it.

Bye for now as it has been hard to even get 10 min to myself!
