OK - none of my RL friends understand this. Today I was talking to my best friend about it and she said 'you need your head read'.

But I just love the man.

I loved him on Question Time the other night and in The Observer today.

It's slightly tragic, but I fantasise (in fact, I know) that in RL he and I would be soul mates.

(This must be a transgressive thing for me because I hated the Iraq War and what he did to the BBC in the aftermath).

Anyone want to join the AC fan club?

He is completely obnoxious and deeply unpleasant. I haven't met him but dh has and says he is totally arrogant and actually not interesting as a dinner speaker.

Of course you don't have to think the Iraq war was OK to like him! That's daft. You can surely seperate fancying someone from agreeing with everything they do!

SambuccaKelly · 30/05/2010 11:26

No, you don't. I don't think the war was 'right' but I am quite tired of being shouted down by people when I say that I don't think it was 'wrong', either. But that's another story...

Slightly different point, but I also don't subscribe to the idea that you have to 'like' political figures to admire or support them. Very school-girlish. It's that whole 'ooh, Clegg seems like such a nice man, I think I'll vote for him' thing. Dimwittage.

Most brilliant political figures are bastards. Fact.

dittany, I just don't see things like that and nobody is going to shout me down into believing otherwise.

I think governments spin the truth all the time. I think wars are very rarely entered into for the reasons that are declared. In fact, has any war ever been fought for the reasons stated by govermments?

I don't think it's right. But I refuse to demonise two people (Blair and Campbell) for the 'sins' of every government and politician and army that has ever existed on this planet.

To be honest, I have debated this so many times in RL and on MN, I am not looking to go over it again. I respect your opinions, but I do not share them.

I think Campbell (and that other Cartoon Villain, Mandelson) are brilliant, brilliant men. However, I would rather have my right arm chewed off by a rabies-infested dingo than shag either of them...

loungelizard · 30/05/2010 11:35

People didn't have to believe him over the 'phony dossier and spin doctored claims' etc. They chose to believe him. No-one forced them.

TDiddy · 30/05/2010 11:36

Dittany- we are saying that we agree with him on the war but he explains his (boss') perspective and is passionate in everything that he does. He is unquestionably compelling and I am guessing has qualities that many people/women find attractive. He DP is similarly attractive which adds to the halo effect.

SambuccaKelly - i am agreeing with much of what you said above re; (flawed) brillaince of Mandelson and Campbell. The fact that they dedicated themselves to re-constructing the Labour party.

Yes, AC and PM didn't invent spin; they were just good at it.

TDiddy · 30/05/2010 11:41

should be "Dittany- we are not saying that we agree with him...."

Dittany- I heard interviews with principal LD's who said Mandelson was the key figure in possible coalition but I realise that you are poking a bit of fun .

On morals, I know that you have the very highest standards after many debates with you arguing that Obama is one of the most corrupt American politicians (or similar) which I still disagree with

Dittany- The LDs thought that Mandy was the one who could deliver it and they had good relations with him. But there were other people on both sides who saw it as an unsustainable/unstable coalition.

On Obama- those were not your words...but you were very very harsh on him. I think that he is proving to be, on his very short time in office, to be potentially the most sensible, sound president that they have had in my lifetime, even though he has to make pragmatic compromises. Early days, so let's see.

SambuccaKelly · 30/05/2010 12:25

I do agree re: sending in Campbell and Mandelson to negotiate with Clegg et al. Must have been hilarious being a fly on the wall.

TDiddy · 30/05/2010 12:30

Apparently Mandy kept sending text messages to LDs from his Bberry to try to sure things up during the meeting.

fifitot · 30/05/2010 13:11

Well I still think it's daft that one cannot find someone attractive without agreeing with their ideologies/politics. Especially from afar.

Do you check out everyone's politics and opinion on the war before deciding whether you'd shag them - virtually.

Coderooo · 30/05/2010 13:13

no no no
i loved him madly till he revealed he never channged a nappy
then it was OVAH

animula · 30/05/2010 13:16

Indeed, Coderoo.

Fathers who don't change nappies = children/pets.

It can be dressed up as "tending" to a "genius" or "Idealist". But it's still nursing/mothering/pet-owning.

Boffing those categories = perverse.

But it's true, you don't have to want to shag someone to put an "X" in a box. Thankfully, I think most of us don't wield the mighty pencil of democracy on such grounds.

But I still do think the threads discussing the "fanciability" of celebrity persons funny. And kind of bonding.

Let's face it, if I started a thread on the local DILF, it would be a very short thread, because most mn-ers wouldn't have enough info to offer their thoughts ... .
