Petition against Theresa May holding the post of equalities minister

Dear Mnetters

Theresa May holds the post of Minister for Women and Equality in addition to being the Home Secretary.

There are two reasons why object to this.

Firstly, as Home Secretary she will not be able to devote enough time to this role.

Secondly, I do not think she is the right person to be an advocate for equality within the Government, given her voting record on homosexual issues:

She voted against the lowering the age consent for homosexuals to 16;
against gay adoption rights; and
against the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill which would give lesbians the right to fertility treatment.

If you agree the petition is here

did it.

She also abstained from the vote on civil partnerships.

Just shows the commitment the tories have to equalities issues really.

Yes she is Minister for Women and Equality as well as home secretary. She did have a shadow portfolio of schools, disabled people and women under William Hague according to wiki.

Apparently there is a facebook campaign against her called Sack New Homophobic Equality Minister which has 40,000 members!

SomeGuy · 16/05/2010 18:08

yes a facebook campaign started by Labour party supporters, a bit tedious really.

She voted in favour of civil partnerships for homosexuals, let's just see what she has to say rather than trying to portray a few votes while in opposition 12 years ago as evidence of 'homophobia'?

SomeGuy · 16/05/2010 18:13

contrary to what pinkteddy says, but consistent with a lot of other nonsense being put about, she voted in favour of civil partnerships:

www.publicwhip.org.uk/division.php?date=2004-10-12&number=256&mpn=Theresa_May&mpc=Maidenhead&house=c ommons

None of the Shadow Cabinet voted against Civil Partnerships.

Someguy. phobia. An irrational fear of something...do you seriously think Theresa May has a phobia against homosexuals? Hardly....

SomeGuy · 16/05/2010 18:34

No I don't think that at all, but the bitter lefties trying to attack her by proxy (if I was a Guardian journalist I'd probably throw something in about misogyny at this point) have described her as 'homophobic'.

Jaybird37. The only petition I would sign is against part of the Equalities Bill the bill discriminates against white boys/men.
In the following ways;

  1. all things being equal a person who has the 'protecte characteristic' will be given the job over a person without that characteristic i.e. if a white male applicant applies for a job and the firm has many white people at the firm/company the non-white person or a female will be given the job, purely on the grounds of gender or race.

Harriet Harman has set aside £300 million of tax payers money to fight court cases and tribunals when this bill is up and running.

Lastly my son will probably get the job over a lot of MNs sons' who are probably white, my son has a 'protected characteristic'.
Many of your sons' applictions for jobs will be 'binned' before they ever get to the interview stage. If I was going to sign a petition it would be for one I've set up myself against this discriminatory bill.

Thought she was just Minister for Women and her junior minister Lynne Featherstone was for 'other' equalities? LF is a LibDem with excellent record on the subject.

Prolesworth that's a link to a blog of an activist of another party, and it is distorted and misleading.

There is by the way, the issue that 'equality' is actually a very divisive subject.

For instance, according to The Guardian www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/oct/26/relationships 56% of people oppose adoption by gay couples.

It is not a belief held by only a minority of people.

SomeGuy - Just because you are in a majority does not mean you are right. Anyway, I'd rather wait and see what she actually does.

complimentary · 16/05/2010 20:17

Most people oppose same sex adoptions, I do I have not problems with her.

BeenBeta · 16/05/2010 20:19

Lets face it Labour didn't exactly push through work place equality laws with any vigour did it?

Backed off every time business objected. Maybe a Tory will be a bit less timid of business.

No I am not accepting that the voting record is fact. The political activist has copied it from here:

www.publicwhip.org.uk/mp.php?mpn=Theresa_May&mpc=Maidenhead&house=commons&dmp=826&display=allvotes

fucked with the colours to make 'absent' appear the same as 'against' and wilfully omitted her vote in favour of civil partnership.

As for whether or not children should be raised by same-sex couples, I haven't studied the evidence, but to repeat what I said 'equality' is very divisive.

She voted in favour of civil partnerships, which are issues of individual freedoms, but against gay adoption and fertility treatment, areas where children have to be considered.

Obvious there are differing views on this, and to write her off as 'homophobic' is clearly nonsense.

Leningrad. It is far too early. to see the results of say a child adopted by two men. In any case most people would not want their childrn adopted by either two men, or two women. Society has changed and it has become more accepting of homosexuals, the needs of children have not, in that they need a mother and a father, like their peers, who happily for them, most have biological parents.
