Wouldn`t it be more fairer to have a con/lab coalition as more people voted Lab than Lib

I know it seems simple, but it seems so unfair that Cleggy is deputy PM when they have so few seats compared to Labour, surely Labour deserve a deputy PM and members of the cabinet as more people chose them to represent them than Liberals ??? Please can someone explain.

i guess they didn't want to collaborate

Kewcumber · 12/05/2010 16:41

but any coalition has to come up with sufficient policies on which they agree in order to form a working government. Which policies would you suggest Labout and conservative might agree on?!

thinker · 12/05/2010 16:41

I mean fairer/ more fair

I dont know ? I really dont understand, I am not making a point, I wish to be educated.

I would think it highly unlikely that Labour and the Conservatives could form a coalition. Cameron would of course have been PM still because he was leader of the larger party, and I don't think that would have sat well with Labour.

thinker · 12/05/2010 16:44

Before the election, it seemed that Clegg did not have much in common with Cameraon, but suddenley they are so similar, its like they are making it fit and would agree to anything to get on that cabinet ???

I think they just see each other as enemies, really, even though their manifestos are fairly similar. Don't think they'll be co-operating any time soon.

thinker · 12/05/2010 16:50

But what about the public ? They ought to agree in order that we are represented fairly.

thinker, they can't really campaign on saying, 'vote for who you like, it doesn't make that much difference' so they emphasise their differences.
A fair amount of overlap between the Con/Lib manifestos though (mainly cause the Tories nicked our best ideas )

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 12/05/2010 16:52

Ah, now, thinker, that's PR-type reasoning!

(sorry, am replying to you one post behind, my typing speed sucks)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/05/2010 17:02

well, I suppose if they thought they could make it work then they would have tried. nobody stopped them except themselves.

thinker · 12/05/2010 17:38

My husband has just informed me that yes, I am into PR

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been roses and sunshine, can you imagine?

It is just me that has the feeling that Labour are looking on with horror as events unfold?
The more detail that's being revealed, the clearer it is that this has really been thought through with longevity in mind and is very likely to work.

FrakkedUpTheElection · 13/05/2010 09:18

It would have been dire and horrendous and they'd be at each others' throats. Fairer, maybe, but they've been adversaries too long to make it work....

snowlady · 13/05/2010 11:45

It would appear the Daily Mail, polly tonybee and the labour party are looking on in horror

What is the point of the daily mail..is it just to make everyone feel depressed whoever is in government?!

I am hoping the lib/con coalition is succesful and have renewed my lapsed membership to the lib dems.

AbsOfCroissant · 13/05/2010 13:28

I think they didn't form a coalition with Tories as well, as the UK has an adversarial form of government - they are the opposition. they're supposed to kind of keep the Tories in check.

FrakkedUpTheElection · 13/05/2010 16:35

Abs - the LDs would have become the opposition but they'd have been tiny. Lab/Tory would have given a huuuuuge majority!

But I agree Labour are just mentally 'the opposition' to the Tories.

sethstarkaddersmum · 13/05/2010 16:36

otoh if they did manage to agree on anything they would have no trouble at all getting the legislation passed!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 13/05/2010 16:37

I think hell is more likely to freeze over

ooojimaflip · 13/05/2010 16:39

This is a joke yeah?
