For Mr Dear Gordon Brown and Family, because I know Sarah Brown may lurk, a support thread

although I can't dictate that, I hope that is how it turns out.

I for one will miss you. I and my family will be sad to see you go. They've painted not just the town but most of the country red for you!

I think your heart was in the right place, though I did not always, and I think you really cared, even about people like us, in the Highlands of Scotland.

I hope when it's all over, that you and your family come home to Fife and enjoy a retirement.

We don't live in the East anymore, and it will all I can do to keep us here for now. But my husband and my elder two are from the East in Edinburgh, and all their family from Fife and the Perthshire Highlands, who accepted me, a foreigner, as their own when they were under no obligation to do so.

You are so welcome up here.

The Queen Mother, daughter of the Earl Strathmore said, 'Duty is the rent you pay on life.'

You took that to heart, and regardless of what others may say, some of us believe that, maybe even the Queen!

Best of luck to you and yours and just to know, you are not without your supporters, Mr Brown (I think that is how he is called but forgive me if not).

Well done. And, as Churchill said, 'Keep b*ggering on.'

Thank you for all you have both done for this country. Your boys have got a Mum and Dad to be proud of. Congratulations on carrying yourself with dignity and what a moving speech.

Thandeka · 11/05/2010 19:59

Dear Mr Brown,
I think you are awesome, running this daft country must be a hellish job and I think you did a bloody fantastic job in incredibly difficult circumstances.
Good luck with anything you and your family decide to do in your future.

I am another one who is really sad to see you go. Like everybody else on this thread I feel that you are a decent and moral man - well done on sticking to your principles. It also saddens me that to get on in politics you need to be shiny and media friendly.

Wishing you and your family all of the very best.

PS - as others have said - she WAS a bigot and everybody I have spoken to (including my dyed in the wool conservative husband) admired you for saying it - it might not have been media savvy but it was honest.

SurferRosa · 11/05/2010 20:11

Great thread. So sad to see a leader go who has such integrity, passion and moral conviction.

RunawayWife · 11/05/2010 20:12

I am sorry to see him go, I think the labour party did some great things for this country, and I am sure once Cameron has brought us to our knees again and people find they have buggered up big time I look forward to the Labour comeback.

I think Gorden Brown has shown courage and dignity today, and I wish him and his family well

ohmeohmy · 11/05/2010 20:14

Goodbye and good luck. Enjoy your family and a well earned rest. I shall be dusting off my protesting shoes and getting ready for business with the Tories and their chums.

larrysgal · 11/05/2010 20:15

Good luck for the future, to you and your family.

wolfbrother · 11/05/2010 20:17

I wish Gordon and Sarah Brown all the very best in their life after politics, and may he continue to adore the "best job in the world" as husband and father to his lovely boys.

I have always admired their integrity and decency

Lizzylou · 11/05/2010 20:17

This is such a lovely thread and I agree.

I think Gordon Brown had such a run of bad luck and has handled it extremely well.

I heard Lembit Opik being interviewed on the radio and he was saying that Gordon had arranged funding into research for a Motor Neurone charity and had asked for no publicity, he said GB was a kind and genuine man.

I think this sentence summed it up for me

"A Statesman not a Showman"

Which personally I found very refresing.

TheStraitsofWTF · 11/05/2010 20:18

Great thread, expat. Sad to see you go, Mr Brown, but I hope you sleep easy tonight, and do feel some weight off your shoulders.

RunawayWife · 11/05/2010 20:20

I think he looks 10 years younger then he did last week.

twinkerbell · 11/05/2010 20:22

all i say is well done and I hope you both sit back now and watch Mr Camerons performance because I think he and many others havent really got a clue just what they have taken on, have a well earned private rest and enjoy your young childrenx

robino · 11/05/2010 20:23

Good call on this thread.

Mr Brown,

Your integrity, fairness and moral compass are, and always have been self-evident; you are a good man. I like you all the more for not being shiny, polished and orange.

May history be kinder to you than the Press have been. Enjoy family life all the more now that you are able to live it on a quieter scale; you look like a lovely family.

Thank you

bluebump · 11/05/2010 20:25

I feel very sad having watched your speech and to see you go, I hope you have a lovely break with your family.

BicycleBelle · 11/05/2010 20:26

I'll sign up to this also. A decent honourable man who followed his principles, and refreshingly ignored PR glitz. Westminster will be a slicker, smoother but a less honest place. And Sarah conducted herself with dignity and intelligence.
P.S Cute boys!!

Aitch · 11/05/2010 20:27

was JUST about to start similar thread, expat, although OP wouldn't have been written half so well.

kindest regards to Gordon Brown and his family. history will treat you with more kindness than you could possibly think at this point.

luckywinner · 11/05/2010 20:28

Dear Mr Brown

I think you have done an amazing job. You stood up for those who needed someone to stand up for them. I have a lot of respect for the way you have handled the situation this week. I admire you greatly and am truly saddened that when I wake up tomorrow you will no longer be our prime minister.

Mrs Brown

I hope you are immensely proud of your husband. If only other politicians had his level of integrity.

Best best best wishes for the future.

persephonesnape · 11/05/2010 20:28

thank you - and labour for sure start, childrens centres, tax credits, extended schools. the child poverty bill, the government equalities office. civil partnerships. for making me feel that, as a single parent i can be a strong, capable role model to my children. for displaying integrity and fortitude, for giving us hope.

wishing you and your lovely family all the very best.

redrosette · 11/05/2010 20:28

love the browns. lovely couple, genuinely in love with each other and their children. Only wanted to get the job done and was bullied out of office. It's disgraceful the way he was treated

I do hope the browns read this and feel a bit better.

Now we supporters fight on - there'll be another election soon and by god we'd better win it.

may your lives be happy ones and I am very very sorry to see you go.

I voted for you because I believe you were the only person who could lead us upwards.

This is a sad sad day

KaraThrace · 11/05/2010 20:35

Dear Mr Brown,

I am so terribly sad to see you go, I think you are a wonderful man and the passion is there for everyone to see when you are giving your speeches. Whilst the country will be a worse place without you at the helm I am sure you will continue to do good for the world.

I think the way you were treated by the press was shocking and a terrible reflection of society today.

I hope you get to enjoy some wonderful family time away from the stress of the press and running the country.

And I apologise for not voting Labour, never will I make that mistake again.

All the best and I look forward to hearing about your future endeavours.

BalsamicJam · 11/05/2010 20:36

Can't add anymore other than to say I am saddened to see him go - a dignified resignation speech - a man of real integrity.

slushy06 · 11/05/2010 20:40

I personally have liked you from the beginning and I am really sad to see you go .

Good luck I really hope things turn out well for you.
