What do you think of Peter Mandelson?

That's it really - I'm just interested.

(Disclaimer-type thingy: I'm not particularly a supporter or hater of any of the three main parties)

I think we are glad he is on our side.

Ewe · 10/05/2010 21:57

I think he is a brilliant evil genius

Beachcomber · 10/05/2010 21:58

Sorry - didn't mean that to sound so divisive. I just mean he's a crafty one and you would rather have him on your team than to have to take him on. He was very good on the beeb on election night.

DavidHameron · 10/05/2010 21:59

I love The Dark Lord.

Really you need people like that in politics; it's politics fgs - if it wasn't about dodgy deals and manoeuvring behind the scenes and knives in the back of the off-message, it wouldn't be, um, politics...

weegiemum · 10/05/2010 21:59

Apparantly when John Holmes off the "Vote Now SHow" for Radio 4 took a picture of him into a primary school, the child he asked mistakenly identified him as Lord Voldemort!

mollymawk · 10/05/2010 22:01

Ah good, some answers - I was worrying you were all too scared to say...

Do you think he does what he does out of principle or has he forgotten all that in the excitement of scoring oints?

OP posts:
brogan2 · 10/05/2010 22:01

I agree with everyone else really.
Lol at Lord Voldemort!

mollymawk · 10/05/2010 22:02

oints could be some new drug though

Used to loathe him when he was on Blair's team (loathe Blair). Don't mind him so much now he's stuck with the programme and not hoyed off to a life of public speaking. PSML at Voldemort.

Beachcomber · 10/05/2010 22:04

He is also excellent entertainment value especially when he starts a sentence with "come on Jeremy" when speaking to Paxman.

Meglet · 10/05/2010 22:05

Someone not to be messed with I reckon.

A mix between the best James Bond villian and Sideshow Bob.

MarionCole · 10/05/2010 22:06

Love him.

mollymawk · 10/05/2010 22:07

Haha yes - very funny with JP

I often have to actively remember he is not a Tory though - does anyone else do that?

OP posts:
Beachcomber · 10/05/2010 22:10

I was just thinking that mollymawk.

EightiesChick · 10/05/2010 22:10

Swimming against the tide here but I loathe him. He's a formidable operator, I admit, but especially in the last year, his determination to grind HE under the heel of big business has really hacked me off (plus his famous relaxedness about people getting 'filthy rich'). It was a key reason why I very reluctantly decided I could not vote Labour again this time round, although I still consider myself a Labour supporter overall and hope to vote for them again in the future.

EightiesChick · 10/05/2010 22:11

Mollymawk - that's my problem: I can't understand why he's not a Tory! And I do think it's about the thrill of having control now. His head must have swelled hugely when Brown asked him back.

megcleary · 10/05/2010 22:12

Oh Mandy.....

he makes it interesting bless him ( and blesses self just in case)

MarionCole · 10/05/2010 22:17

DH thinks he should get his own daytime chat show, in the style of Jeremy Kyle.

mollymawk · 10/05/2010 22:21

Haha, Mandy Kyle, what a thought.

Labour supporter here - I think he's probably bloody good at his job but he really is the Prince of Darkness and makes my flesh crawl. Evil genius is about right.

AndieWalsh · 10/05/2010 22:24

I think he is what he is - a politcial wheeler dealer extrordinaire. Extremely bright man - frighteningly so, actually. A steely survivor. I wouldn't cross him.

Is he likeable? No. Lots of quite brilliant people aren't.

He shows Paxo up every time and for that I adore him

pinkteddy · 10/05/2010 22:25

I quite like him - a while back (when he first returned as a Lord) a mumsnetter revealed that she had worked for him in the past. She said he was brilliant to work for.

mollymawk · 10/05/2010 22:26

Sometimes I wonder whether he would help his party more if he drew less attention to himself though - did all his evil really behind the scenes

OP posts:
SpringHeeledJack · 10/05/2010 22:32

I don't want him behind the scenes, though- I want him out front for entertainment value

edam · 10/05/2010 22:40

I'd rather have him on our side than have to deal with him as an opponent. I'm sure one day Machiavelli will be very pleased to greet him in the afterlife but I woudln't put a bet on it being St Peter who performs the introductions - as my late lamented Granny would say, he might well be going to the other place...
