If you voted lib dems

If you voted lib dem, who would you rather Nick Clegg did a deal with?

My feeling has always been that the lib dems were always more aligned to the left than the right, but I could be wrong.
So if you are a lib dem voter, what do you want NC to do?

Deal with conservative. Did not and will not vote labour because of the civil liberties stuff and both lib dem and tories will scrap id cards etc.

tacticalfloosy · 10/05/2010 16:01

Tories because they were largest party by quite a big margin. i think they will probably cave without an absolute on PR - which for myself I don't mind, am not keen on PR, but will be a disaster for them. Who knows though, so far every prediction I have made about the election has been wrong

ShowOfHands · 10/05/2010 16:02

I'm not a lib dem voter, though I did vote for them tactically.

I really want him to turn up at Westminster in jeans.

I want people to talk about something else for 5 minutes. I want it all over with. I want to go home. I probably want my mum.

I don't want dc and his sith underlings anywhere near anything like power.

God the Liberals are fcking scum...

AMumInScotland · 10/05/2010 16:09

I hate the idea that they might make a deal with the Conservatives that doesn't include a referendum on electoral reform - I think it's right that Nick Clegg is talking to them first, but the comments seem to be sliding away from the need for electoral reform into "well, it would be nice, but the economy is more important". Not that it isn't, but I think they should hold out for the one thing they are known for valuing, or they will be tarred forever as "one whiff of power and they forgot their priorities".

minipie · 10/05/2010 16:11

I voted Lib Dem and would prefer some sort of deal with the conservatives, given all the circumstances (in particular, the fact that Labour lost nearly 100 seats.)

I did not and will not vote Labour because I think their debt-and-spending machine is out of control, as is the nanny state, red tape, quango culture.

On the other hand I did not and will not vote Tory because I am not convinced that they really care about trying to equalise opportunity and protecting the weakest members of society.

My ideal would be a deal where the parties agree to:

  • get rid of the more ridiculously right wing Tory policies (eg IHT threshold rise, marriage tax giveaway, fox bloody hunting)
  • hold a referendum on PR within the next 2 months
  • cut public spending drastically
  • whilst protecting those who are financially the most vulnerable

Whether this is possible I do not know.

ajandjjmum · 10/05/2010 16:13

But wouldn't PR mean that we would be in this 'no man's land' after every election?

Don't really understand it all, but AV seems a better solution to me.

azazello · 10/05/2010 16:13

Agree minipie but think 2 months might be a tad optimistic. I'd settle for 12 months for a referendum.

MumInBeds · 10/05/2010 16:19

All things being equal it would be Labour but they aren't equal, there were more voters wanting Conservatives than Labour so it only seems fair to work with them if anyone.

minipie · 10/05/2010 16:21

I wouldn't want to agree to a referendum in 12 months' time. The next 12 months are going to be pretty hideous what with all the economic measures (spending cuts, tax rises) that will be taken to reduce the deficit.

After 12 months of that, people may associate harsh financial measures with a coalition govt (wrongly of course, but nonetheless they may get that overall impression, and no doubt the Tories will play on this). So I'd say, better to get the PR referendum done before the harsh measures kick in.

Or am I too cynical ?

vesela · 10/05/2010 16:25

Think I'd go for October/November.

SiriusStar · 10/05/2010 16:32

I voted Lib Dem.
I think they should deal with Con first as they have the most seats.
Obviously not my first choice of things as if I had wanted Con to win, I would have voted for them.
But, seeing as there is a sticky situation and it has to be solved somehow, the way it is going seems the best, if longwinded and kinda boring.
Just make a decision already boys!

ajandjjmum · 10/05/2010 17:34

And here was me thinking that at least after the election things will calm down, and maybe business will pick up!!!!

meandjoe · 10/05/2010 17:42

I voted Lib Dem, always have done. I actually think as long as the economy is stabalised and we get electoral reform than either left or right coalition would be acceptable. Of course Conservatives are very unlikel to want PR which hopefully could be a deal breaker.

Not a lover of the Tories obviously and of course I would rather my left wing vote helped form a left wing Government. However, it would be very hypocritical for them to talk about wanting proportional representaton yet rule out supporting the Party who (God knows why) got more votes.

I think that LDs will have been well prepared for this kind of situation and know what they are doing.
