Reasons to be cheerful?

It's a grim time for lefties, but I really need a bright side.
So for starters:

  1. At least the papers aren't full of smug Tories
  2. We'll never have to see Thatcher on telly again
  3. I sense a new spirit of solidarity emerging

Anything else? C'mon, chaps, let's be positive!

I know Dittany but at least I didn't have to look at DC on the the doorstep of no 10 just yet.
For this I am thankful as well as cheerful.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 09/05/2010 00:52

Newspapers tend to favour one party anyway, they always have done. The tabloids were traditionally Labour supporters until the country went downhill. I don't believe what I read, it's mainly opinion, they are all far from impartial. I need to see real evidence.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 09/05/2010 00:54

The BBC's dire tweetymum. There's only a few things worth watching. This being said, at least we don't churn out iCarley

tweetymum · 09/05/2010 00:54

The tabloids are self serving turncoat cowards and will sell their grandmothers if it means a juicy story. And Murdoch's grip on the news media in the UK is alarming and truly scary. Which is why I am forever grateful to the BBC for its balance.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 09/05/2010 00:56

So where's the real evidence that Mr Cameron plans on breaking the BBC up. If he could do something to change the daytime line up to get rid of the shite they currently show I'd be incredibly happy.

atlantis · 09/05/2010 01:35

Gordon Brown is history.

Labour lost so many MP's I'm still smiling.

Labour will be on the opposition benches.

Smith got the boot.

Cameron will be PM.

The Conservatives will be implementing it's manifesto.

I get to see so much more of Hague

Immigration will come down.

Trident will be renewed the country will have a defence system.

We'll have a pupils premium.

More decent schools will be opening.

The improved carriculum will be implemented.

The jobs tax is history.

The BBC will get a kick up the backside.

The deficit will be cut.

No more Gordon Brown (oh wait I said that.. still always worth a second mention )

Banana boy and his stickle haired brother wont screw anything else up.

Ed Balls will not be in charge of education.

Gosh I could go on all night...

scoutliam · 09/05/2010 01:43

Will spelling be on the curriculum?

claig · 09/05/2010 01:48

just looked up banana boy, just to confirm that it is Silly Bland

TDiddy · 09/05/2010 01:48

1)Cameron looks spent on day one

2)Labour can sit back and watch the Tories have spasms over ConLib pack

3)Labour can sit back and watch the LibDs (sadly) have spasms over ConLib pack

4)Not too long before Labour has shiny new leader making DC look like yesterday's man

5)The Tories have to dish out job cuts and deal with strikes

6)George Osbourne has to deal with Sovereign crisis

7)Labour can adopt a few LibDem policies like PR and steal LD votes in a couple of years

8)GB's exit is now looking reasonable compared to most PMs

9)Labour will eventually get credit for making a thumping big profit from bank resucue see here. In a couple of years this profit with be astronomical. I think taxpayer makes 1BN for every 1p rise in RBS share price alone.

10)Mandelson and Co are plotting last stroke before they exit...PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION which could keep Tories out for a long time.

11)NuOLdeLabour is about to be born!!!!!!

TDiddy · 09/05/2010 01:53
  1. Murdoch didnt get his own way

13)Sit back comrades and watch the other two parties sweat

Quattrocento · 09/05/2010 01:59

What really cheers me up is that the british public have in essence voted for neither one side nor the other

We have had X years of Tory rule which supported the market economy and freedom and said there's no such thing as society. Followed by Y years of Labour rule which in essence has been about taxing the rich until the pips squeak.

And that is all bollocks frankly. It's time for more balanced and grown up and consensus politics. Politics which is about creating the greatest good for the greatest number in a sustainable way.

I'm tired of the old seesaw and I want to get off. So yay for a hung parliament.

claig · 09/05/2010 02:01

TDiddy, are you living in a parallel universe? It's over, Labour's finished, they're washed up and burnt out.

WhamBam · 09/05/2010 02:03

Ooh i have one;

claig · 09/05/2010 02:12

good record WhamBam, I like that one.
I never paid much attention to Nutini until I saw him on Jools Holland's Later doing the great Wynonie Harris's Lovin' Machine.
He does a passable job but he's still got a lot to learn, but this is how it's really done

TDiddy · 09/05/2010 06:59

claig - you are very funny above with "Labour's finished, they're washed up and burnt out.".

WOuldn't swap places with Tories. PR will put you out of buiness nfor decades unless you turn into a social democratic party. We will become like France where everyone is on the centre left. Can't wait

TDiddy · 09/05/2010 07:06

claig - talk us through why after 4 elections, the worst recession, with the Murdoch press behind the Tories this is the best they can do?! Really, who is the party that is threatened by PR and aging membership? Huh, talk us through that one please.

TheJollyPirate · 09/05/2010 07:15

All you "Labour are finished" people are making me laugh frankly. If they were so finished then they would have been booted out comprehensively on Thursday. As it is they polled enough seats to keep the Tories out. People voted and we have no clear winner so GB has to remain in place until it is sorted - hardly "finished".

My reasons to be cheerful

I am one of those annoying LibDem people and am delighted that DC is not yet PM. Would rather see a LibD/Lab coalition.

Nick Griffin was hung out to dry in Barking along with many other BNP twunts across the country.

Jacquie Smith lost her seat - never liked her. That was my Portillo moment.

Beachcomber · 09/05/2010 07:18

I am cheerful for the exactly the same reasons as TDiddy.

mrsbean78 · 09/05/2010 07:18

The next few years will be harsh. Austerity will reign. Whoever governs will end up hated for all time. Perfect time for a Tory government

noddyholder · 09/05/2010 07:20

The economy is in such a mess that the measures required almost immediately to tackle the deficit will be enough to get them booted out quite quickly esp if they decide to go ahead as a minority govt without the lib dems. This is a glimmer I suppose.

legoStuckinmyHoover · 09/05/2010 08:24

"We'll have a pupils premium.

More decent schools will be opening.

The improved curriculum will be implemented"

Can you elaborate on these 3 things? How will the curriculum be better for one and for who will it be better? How many new schools and with what and how? And the premium...? Is it because kids will be tested more at school under the tories and that will by some miricle drive up educational standards and improve access and equality for all?

legoStuckinmyHoover · 09/05/2010 08:26

oops, I forgot...

thanks HoochieMommaLurve. I tryly believe that this is all playing out really well for reconfiguration of the centre left.

FreeButtonBee · 09/05/2010 09:24

Oh god, thank you Quattro! Completely agree. It's about time the politicians on both sides grew up.

Perhaps from now on they will canvas on the basis of what they WILL do and not what the other side WON'T do. (And frankly, I think GB was disgraceful in the debates on this. Although none of them were particularly covered in glory on that front )

There is not going to be a strong one-party govt no matter who gets (or stays) in.

So the best thing I have seen is all the parties winding their necks in and concentrating on the job at hand. Which is compromise. No rabble-rousing. About bloody time
